Rachel Sennott on Good Hang with Amy Poehler

The Hang, in Short

Molly Gordon spit hot tea all over her computer right before calling in. That's the kind of chaos that makes this Good Hang setup work. Amy gets Rachel Sennott for the full episode, but first Molly (her costar from Theater Camp and actual wife, legally married in the emotional sense) drops in to dish. They talk about how Rachel straight up announced "I wrote four scripts" when they first met on Shiva Baby, which cost $200,000 and somehow became massive in London specifically. Molly's burning question for Rachel is where that unapologetic ambition came from, because most people hide wanting things that badly. Also, Molly wants Rachel to tell the story about the first time she was fingered, a bit she used to do onstage. There's a whole tangent about tea versus coffee and using Sweet Green bathrooms. Amy's a Barry's Tea person now.

Tik Tok and how to use it and work it

  14. 0:33

and what we love about it. She's going

to give me fashion advice and she's

  16. 0:36

going to give me reasons to love LA

  17. 0:38

which is what her show is all about. So

  18. 0:41

very great conversation. But before we

  19. 0:43

get started, we always talk to someone

  20. 0:44

who knows our guest, who can tell me

  21. 0:47

something about our guest and give me a

  22. 0:48

question to ask our guest. And we have

  23. 0:51

    another supremely talented, delightful

  24. 0:54

young woman joining us today, Molly

Gordon. Molly Gordon is an actor. You

  26. 1:00

may know her from the hit show The Bear

  27. 1:02

  28. 1:05

the Bear. Um, and she's in films such as

  29. 1:08

Theater Camp and Oh High. She's super

  30. 1:10

talented. And Molly uh is going to join

  31. 1:12

us and give us some info about her buddy

  32. 1:15

    >> Hi,, it's, nice, to, meet, you., Yeah,, I've

  48. 2:06

always seen you from afar and like I'm

  49. 2:08

trying to send you very intense love and

  50. 2:10

I don't know if I've fully found my way

  51. 2:12

over but um but yeah, but honestly I've

  52. 2:14

been listening to your podcast before I

  53. 2:16

go to sleep. So you've been spending a

  54. 2:18

lot of intimate time with me.

  55. 2:20

    >> Oh,, yay., That, makes, me, feel, happy., It's

  56. 2:22

I'm was thrilled you wanted to talk

  57. 2:24

    today.

  58. 2:25

    >> I'm, so, excited, to, talk, about, my, my, wife.

  59. 2:27

    So

  60. 2:28

    >> she, really, is, your, wife., Look,, I, uh, I

  61. 2:30

was looking at the stuff that you and

  62. 2:31

Rachel have done together and how long

  63. 2:33

you've known each other and you really

  64. 2:35

    are are married. Legally married.

  65. 2:39

    >> We're, legally, married., Um, she

  66. 2:42

    >> Yeah,, it's, she's, my, wife., We, talk, every

  67. 2:44

    single day. Um

  68. 2:46

    >> Wow.

  69. 2:47

    >> We, if, one, of, us, doesn't, respond,, we'll

  70. 2:49

just keep calling and it's hard to know

  71. 2:51

when it's like an emergency or not, I

  72. 2:53

would say, with with her. Um, but yeah

  73. 2:56

she's an incredible human being and like

  74. 2:59

I you guys together is going to be

  75. 3:01

    magic.

  76. 3:02

    >> Well,, I'm, thrilled, to, talk, about, her

  77. 3:03

today with you. But before I do, let's

  78. 3:06

    not forget about Molly.

  79. 3:08

    >> Okay.

  80. 3:08

    >> What's, Molly, up, to, today?

  81. 3:10

    >> I'm, prepping, um, a, movie, that, I'm, going

  82. 3:12

    to direct.

  83. 3:13

    >> Fantastic.

  84. 3:15

    >> That, I'm, that, I'm, actually, gonna, send

  85. 3:16

you Amy at some point so we can Yeah.

  86. 3:19

    >> And, you, have, to, tell, me, live, on, the

  87. 3:21

podcast if you want to be a part of it

  88. 3:22

or not. Um, but uh but I'm good. I just

  89. 3:26

I made hot tea and then I burned I like

  90. 3:29

burned my whole mouth and then spit it

  91. 3:31

out all over the computer and that's

  92. 3:32

kind of where I'm at right now.

  93. 3:33

    >> Let's, talk, about, tea, for, a, second, cuz

  94. 3:35

I'm a tea girl more than a coffee girl.

  95. 3:37

    Are you too?

  96. 3:38

    >> I, like, tea., I, I, violently, wake, up, and, I

  97. 3:41

want like seven coffees, a matcha, then

  98. 3:43

    I have a tea around 3.

  99. 3:45

    >> Okay., And, what, kind, of, tea, do, you, like

  100. 3:46

to drink? So, I love this hot cinnamon

  101. 3:49

    spice

  102. 3:51

    >> Harley, and, Sun's, tea,, but, usually

  103. 3:54

    English breakfast or peppermint. You

  104. 3:56

    >> thanks, for, asking., I, enjoy, my, favorite

  105. 4:00

tea is a an Irish tea called Berries tea

  106. 4:03

    which I highly recommend

  107. 4:05

    >> and, it's, a, black, tea, and, I, don't, like

  108. 4:07

any other I mean maybe occasionally I'll

  109. 4:09

do a peppermint like if I've had a like

  110. 4:11

    a big meal

  111. 4:15

    >> just, want, to, chill, out

  112. 4:16

    >> we, needed, to, move, through, you, in, a, way

  113. 4:19

    got it

  114. 4:19

    >> yeah, totally, but, I've, switched, entirely

  115. 4:23

from co I used to be kind of a coffee

  116. 4:24

person now I'm totally tea and It's made

  117. 4:28

    a diff.

  118. 4:28

    >> And, do, you, feel, like, that's, changed, your

  119. 4:30

    whole personality?

  120. 4:31

    >> It, definitely, has, changed, my, stomach's

  121. 4:33

personality cuz I used to have to drink

  122. 4:35

coffee like it was melted ice cream

  123. 4:37

like tons of cream and sugar.

  124. 4:39

    >> Yes.

  125. 4:40

    >> Um, and, now, it's, helped, a, lot, to, not, have

  126. 4:44

to get into that like just to have that

  127. 4:46

much [ __ ] in my stomach. Not have to go

  128. 4:49

to the bathroom every morning. Totally.

  129. 4:51

I I uh yeah, I moved back to New York

  130. 4:54

and I was like, "Oh, it's it's really

  131. 4:55

fun to like drink so much coffee and

  132. 4:57

then like be trying to make it home to

  133. 4:59

your house." Like I was nostalgic living

  134. 5:01

in LA for that like am I going to make

  135. 5:03

    it home?

  136. 5:04

    >> Yes., I, mean, there, for, people, who, you

  137. 5:07

know and this happen this happens in a

  138. 5:09

lot of cities but like you get to know

  139. 5:10

where you have to quickly go to the

  140. 5:11

bathroom. You have to learn and in Los

  141. 5:13

Angeles you're kind of in trouble. You

  142. 5:16

spend a lot of time in your car.

  143. 5:18

    >> It's, tough., A, sweet, green., They're

  144. 5:20

pretty kind at a sweet green. I I do

  145. 5:22

    have to say

  146. 5:22

    >> they're, sweet.

  147. 5:23

    >> Yeah,, they're, sweet.

  148. 5:25

    >> So,, when, when, was, the, first, time, you

  149. 5:27

met? Tell us about your meat cute of

  150. 5:29

when you met your wife. So, I met my

  151. 5:32

wife um MX Eleman, the director of Shiva

  152. 5:36

Baby, had a set of breakfast for me and

  153. 5:38

    Rachel

  154. 5:40

and we all ate and Rachel thought I was

  155. 5:44

like a real actress cuz Rachel had just

  156. 5:46

like been a standup and and she she was

  157. 5:48

asking me a lot like what it's like to

  158. 5:50

be a real actress and and lots of

  159. 5:52

questions and um and I was kind of like

  160. 5:54

    I'm the normal I'm just I don't really

  161. 5:56

get work and like we're because I'd been

  162. 5:58

in like one movie Um, but she Yeah. And

  163. 6:02

then we like we read the script together

  164. 6:03

and she was so funny. And I had just

  165. 6:05

never met like women my age that were

  166. 6:09

    that

  167. 6:11

    um unapolog unapologetically ambitious.

  168. 6:16

    >> Like

  169. 6:17

    >> she, is, so, honest, about, what, she, wants, in

  170. 6:20

her life and like what she does, what

  171. 6:22

she's trying to achieve, like her what

  172. 6:24

she does every day. And I would always

  173. 6:26

hide that I wanted those things. And I

  174. 6:28

    feel like

  175. 6:29

It was just so inspiring. But yeah, I

  176. 6:31

agree. Like I think she kind of showed

  177. 6:33

me with like with that film she was

  178. 6:36

trying out so many different things and

  179. 6:38

you know it's that movie is a lot about

  180. 6:39

sexuality and all these things but she

  181. 6:41

just showed me you don't have to fit in

  182. 6:42

like some box. She was like sometimes I

  183. 6:44

want to do this, sometimes I want to do

  184. 6:45

    this and like I don't know I I when I

  185. 6:48

was thinking about what I wanted to ask

  186. 6:51

her, I was like how did you have that

  187. 6:53

    confidence?

  188. 6:54

That's exactly what I wanted to start

  189. 6:56

with because but it's a funny question

  190. 6:58

right? I've been doing this podcast for

  191. 7:00

a while and there's people that come in

  192. 7:02

and I want to say how did you know what

  193. 7:05

you knew? Like like how how did how did

  194. 7:07

you get this sense of yourself? And it's

  195. 7:09

a hard one to answer because it's

  196. 7:10

sometimes it's just kind of the way that

  197. 7:12

they came out into the world. Totally.

  198. 7:14

And she's still speaking of what we're

  199. 7:16

    saying about containing multitudes, like

  200. 7:18

she's still really vulnerable, but she's

  201. 7:20

just But I don't The first time I met

  202. 7:22

her, Amy, she was like, "I wrote four

  203. 7:24

scripts. I'm doing this. I want to do

  204. 7:26

this." And like I had just never seen

  205. 7:27

anyone act that way because you think

  206. 7:29

"Oh, that's like gonna show that you

  207. 7:31

have a big head or something." But it's

  208. 7:32

like, no, she wants to create things.

  209. 7:34

    >> Yeah.

  210. 7:35

    >> Um,

  211. 7:36

    >> but, I, don't, know., It's, it's, you, can, get

  212. 7:38

into it with her, but it's like, yeah

  213. 7:39

she wants to create things and she wants

  214. 7:41

to have great sex and she wants to have

  215. 7:44

a great meal and she wants to cuddle

  216. 7:45

with her friends. Like, she wants all of

  217. 7:46

those things and there's nothing wrong

  218. 7:48

with that. And you don't need to choose

  219. 7:49

one lane to be in or something.

  220. 7:52

    >> Shiva, Baby, was, made, for, $200,000.

  221. 7:55

    >> Yeah.

  222. 7:57

    >> Wow.

  223. 7:58

    >> Yeah., It's, crazy.

  224. 8:00

    >> And, and, how, much, did, it, end, up, making?

  225. 8:03

    >> And, that, all, went, to, me.

  226. 8:05

    >> Yeah., You, have, a, your, quote, was

  227. 8:06

    $199,000.

  228. 8:08

    >> Yeah,, I, I, had, only, worked, a, little, bit,

  229. 8:10

but my quote was um I don't know how

  230. 8:13

much it made, but it uh definitely not

  231. 8:17

that much because it came out in co. We

  232. 8:19

do have to say Emma and I and Rachel

  233. 8:22

always laugh that the movie is huge in

  234. 8:23

    London.

  235. 8:25

    >> We, don't, think, a, lot, of, people, don't

  236. 8:26

know it in the States, but in London

  237. 8:28

    we're huge.

  238. 8:29

    >> You, walk, around, and, it's, it's, like, the

  239. 8:32

    Beatles

  240. 8:33

    >> in, London., I'm, like, having, to, go, like

  241. 8:35

    this. But everywhere else it's

  242. 8:36

    completely [ __ ] Yeah. Yeah.

  243. 8:39

    >> There, must, be, a, lot, of, like, Jewish, women

  244. 8:42

who have sex at Chivas. I don't know.

  245. 8:44

    Good for them.

  246. 8:45

    >> And, they, all, live, in, London.

  247. 8:47

    >> Yeah.

  248. 8:48

    >> Um, Okay., So,, just, to, be, clear,

  249. 8:51

uh your question for Rachel is what?

  250. 8:54

    >> My, question, for, Rachel, is, people, have

  251. 8:56

said that you from a young age were very

  252. 8:59

    unapologetically ambitious. Where did

  253. 9:01

that come from or how did you learn to

  254. 9:04

be that way? Where did that instinct

  255. 9:05

    where was the through line?

  256. 9:07

    >> Great, question., Okay., And, then, the, last

  257. 9:10

thing I'll say is there anything you

  258. 9:12

want me to any story you want me to

  259. 9:14

prompt Rachel to tell because she's a

  260. 9:17

very good storyteller I've noticed on

  261. 9:18

these kind of things. I'd love for you

  262. 9:21

to ask her about the the first time that

  263. 9:24

    she was fingered.

  264. 9:30

    >> Fantastic.

  265. 9:31

    >> I'm, sorry., I, just, It's, an, incredible

  266. 9:34

story and she used to do it in Oh, and

  267. 9:36

I'd also love you to ask her if she'll

  268. 9:38

    come back to standup.

  269. 9:40

    >> Great., So,, did, she, tell, her, fingering

  270. 9:43

    story on stage? Okay, great.

  271. 9:45

    >> It's, not, like, a, violation., Yeah., Yeah.

  272. 9:47

Yeah. Yeah. You can say the Molly or

  273. 9:49

like someone was bringing up, you know

  274. 9:51

some of your first pleasuring experience

  275. 9:53

or whatever, but um but I think her and

  276. 9:55

I need to get back to standup. I know

  277. 9:57

they're famous actors now, but it's like

  278. 9:59

come on, we got to see you on stage. I

  279. 10:01

know. They're so funny. And it standup

  280. 10:03

is so it is like I want to talk to her

  281. 10:06

about it because as you know like and

  282. 10:08

you know from being on stage like if you

  283. 10:10

can be on stage and hang in there you

  284. 10:13

build a muscle where you can kind of

  285. 10:15

almost you can handle almost anything

  286. 10:17

    almost anything.

  287. 10:18

    >> Yeah.

  288. 10:19

    >> It's, so, good, talking, to, you., You've, in

  289. 10:21

    >> How, do, you, like, the, the, height, of, this

  343. 12:18

    chair as a fellow shorty?

  344. 12:19

    >> I, love, it., I, love, it., And, I, love, I, love

  345. 12:23

that we're both short. I I always talk

  346. 12:26

about like is it a short set or a tall

  347. 12:28

    set.

  348. 12:29

    >> It's, very, true, because, we, can't, reach

  349. 12:31

things. Things are too high for us. And

  350. 12:34

    also I like I don't like feeling I don't

  351. 12:37

like feeling short if that makes sense.

  352. 12:39

    >> Right, now, I'm, feeling, very, tall., Good.

  353. 12:40

    >> I'm, feeling, 5'6.

  354. 12:42

    >> We're, both, We're, both, giving, 5'6, right

  355. 12:44

    now.

  356. 12:44

    >> We, are.

  357. 12:45

    >> That's, my, dream., 56, is, my, dream

  358. 12:47

    actually.

  359. 12:47

    >> Me, too.

  360. 12:48

    >> I'm, with, Rachel, Senate., She, is, here.

  361. 12:51

    >> Rachel,, I'm, so, happy, that, you're, here., I

  362. 12:53

am so happy that you're here and so is

  363. 12:56

my entire family. My dad was freaking

  364. 12:58

    out. And he was like

  365. 12:59

    >> "Tell, me, about, your, dad."

  366. 13:01

    >> He, I'm, addicted, to, him., I, My, love, is, my

  367. 13:04

    dad.

  368. 13:04

    >> Okay,, this, is, what, is, so, incredible

  369. 13:06

about people in their 30s. They love

  370. 13:08

    their parents. We

  371. 13:11

    >> you, take, you, take, a, journey

  372. 13:14

    >> and, I, literally, just, turned, 30, like, a

  373. 13:16

couple weeks ago and I looked it's

  374. 13:19

almost like you have to like go away and

  375. 13:22

be like I'm my own I'm an adult like you

  376. 13:24

don't even [ __ ] know me like and then

  377. 13:26

I like something shifted and you're like

  378. 13:29

    >> you're, my, friends.

  379. 13:31

    >> You, know, what, it's, actually, I, do, want, to

  380. 13:32

talk about that. That's actually really

  381. 13:33

deep. It does happen in your 20s. You

  382. 13:35

    have to kind of separate.

  383. 13:36

    >> Yes.

  384. 13:37

    >> And, it's, painful., It's, painful.

  385. 13:39

    >> Was, it, painful, for, you?

  386. 13:41

    >> Yes., And, I'm, like, scared, because, I, know

  387. 13:44

of everything I've done. I'm like both

  388. 13:46

of my parents are absolutely listening

  389. 13:48

to every second of this. Okay.

  390. 13:49

    >> Other, things, they're, like, we'll, skip

  391. 13:51

that one. So I'm like let me try to let

  392. 13:53

    me try to

  393. 13:53

    >> tell, me, about, your, parents., They, are

  394. 13:55

what do they what what were they what

  395. 13:57

what are they like? What did they do?

  396. 13:59

What was their job? Because here's one

  397. 14:01

    of my highest compliments.

  398. 14:03

    >> Yes.

  399. 14:04

    >> You, seem, like, a, Manhattan, Nepo, baby., And

  400. 14:08

you're not girl. Don't fur with me.

  401. 14:11

    Thank you. Thank you.

  402. 14:13

    >> Congrats., Thank, you., I, am, maybe, an

  403. 14:16

insurance nepo baby basically in that my

  404. 14:19

dad works in insurance and he did hook

  405. 14:21

me up with car insurance multiple times

  406. 14:23

cuz I was driving around with a car with

  407. 14:26

no insurance getting in car accidents

  408. 14:28

and he was like, "Let me help you."

  409. 14:30

    >> He, was, like, "This, is, what, I, do.

  410. 14:31

    >> This, is, what, I, do.", So,, my, parents, both

  411. 14:34

were accountants and they met when they

  412. 14:36

were both accountants at the same firm

  413. 14:39

and then um fell in love, dated secretly

  414. 14:43

    >> because, they, were, sort, of, like, we, got, to

  415. 14:45

keep it lowkey, which like you

  416. 14:47

    >> they're, like,, "We, don't, want, it, to, mess

  417. 14:49

with the numbers. We don't want our

  418. 14:51

romance to get like to screw up the

  419. 14:53

    numbers."

  420. 14:54

    >> Literally,, by, the, way,, they, when, they

  421. 14:56

got married, they got a mug that said

  422. 14:58

which doesn't make sense, a mug that

  423. 15:00

    said, "Beware of accountants." they

  424. 15:02

    multiply.

  425. 15:03

    >> Which, I'm, like,, they, don't., You, two, were

  426. 15:06

already accountants and then you got

  427. 15:08

together and none of your five children

  428. 15:11

    are accountants.

  429. 15:12

    >> Well,, excuse, me., Five, children., That's, a

  430. 15:15

lot of children. Where are you in the

  431. 15:16

    birth order of that?

  432. 15:17

    >> I'm, second, oldest.

  433. 15:20

    >> Ah,, okay.

  434. 15:20

    >> So,, so, they, fell, in, love, and, they, just

  435. 15:22

    started

  436. 15:23

    >> they, multiplied.

  437. 15:24

    >> They, and, they, multiplied., They, started

  438. 15:25

popping them out. And I will say I feel

  439. 15:29

    like they they

  440. 15:32

having five or four siblings, but being

  441. 15:34

in a big family is a huge part of who I

  442. 15:37

am because I think it's like

  443. 15:40

    >> automatically, you, have, so, many, different

  444. 15:42

personalities. It's like if you put us

  445. 15:44

all together, there's like you could

  446. 15:46

kind of make connections between like

  447. 15:48

pairs, but some of it is really random

  448. 15:51

like where you're like all of you guys.

  449. 15:54

And I think like my parents did a really

  450. 15:56

good job raising us and and sort of like

  451. 16:01

    taking everyone basically like not

  452. 16:03

    putting anyone's needs above another.

  453. 16:06

like everyone's career and what everyone

  454. 16:09

does is equally important and like you

  455. 16:12

sort of had to like you know shout at

  456. 16:16

the dinner table to be heard and like

  457. 16:19

you you automatically have to compromise

  458. 16:21

because it's like there there's no way

  459. 16:23

everyone's going to be happy all the

  460. 16:25

    time. There's

  461. 16:25

    >> people, you, have, two, very, rightrain

  462. 16:27

parents it sounds like too like so are

  463. 16:29

you like an like and you have pursued a

  464. 16:32

very artistic path in your family with

  465. 16:34

the siblings. Does it go either way?

  466. 16:36

There's some people that are like strong

  467. 16:38

in STEM and numbers people and other

  468. 16:40

    people that are artists.

  469. 16:41

    >> We, I, would, say, we've, got, I'm, gonna, say

  470. 16:44

    three artists

  471. 16:46

    >> but, but, because, I'm, going, to, say, my, mom

  472. 16:50

    >> secret, artist,

  473. 16:50

    >> secret, artist, like, she, she, did, like, my

  474. 16:54

first play ever with me. I was like, I

  475. 16:56

really want to audition for a play and

  476. 16:57

she was like, I'll audition with you.

  477. 16:59

    >> This, is, so, different.

  478. 17:01

    >> So, different., and, she, and, she, like, sings

  479. 17:04

and like plays piano. So it's like I

  480. 17:06

    feel like

  481. 17:07

    >> the, art, was, there.

  482. 17:09

    >> My, dad, not, an, artist, but, like, trying, to

  483. 17:11

make everyone else do art. So he like

  484. 17:13

forced me and my siblings to like play

  485. 17:15

in a quartet for our family.

  486. 17:17

    >> That's, very, mathy., That's, very, numbery.

  487. 17:19

    >> Yes., Like, you, will, play, like, m, music, and

  488. 17:23

    instruments is still like

  489. 17:24

    >> still, kind, of, mathy

  490. 17:25

    >> an, accountant, stream.

  491. 17:26

    >> That's, totally, totally

  492. 17:28

    >> versus, whatever, the, hell, I'm, doing., It's

  493. 17:32

    a little It's a little more lefty

  494. 17:33

    loosey.

  495. 17:34

    >> Well,, what, I, love, about, what, you, just

  496. 17:35

said, because it does feel like you're

  497. 17:37

in a you grew up in a family where you

  498. 17:39

    had to kind of

  499. 17:40

    >> you, know,, you, just, have, to, make, space

  500. 17:41

    for yourself. Yeah.

  501. 17:42

    >> You, have, to, figure, it, out., Like, you

  502. 17:44

said, you have to kind of compete in a

  503. 17:45

    healthy way.

  504. 17:46

    >> Yes.

  505. 17:47

    >> One, of, the, or, not, or, not, healthy., One, of

  506. 17:49

the things that I love about you, not

  507. 17:52

knowing you, we're meeting for the first

  508. 17:54

time, is that there's something about

  509. 17:57

the way that you are in your own

  510. 18:00

experience, like your own body that's

  511. 18:02

very grounded and very um self- assured.

  512. 18:07

And it's kind of like you have it or you

  513. 18:09

don't. It's like this ine ineffable

  514. 18:11

thing where you just you you make us

  515. 18:14

lean into you, Rachel. like you you're

  516. 18:16

kind of yourself in real time and we're

  517. 18:19

and we all become very interested and

  518. 18:20

curious about it. Like there's not a

  519. 18:23

grasping energy from you. you're kind of

  520. 18:25

doing your thing and people are like

  521. 18:27

invited to come along and that's really

  522. 18:31

nice of you to say and that means a lot

  523. 18:33

coming from you cuz you have I feel like

  524. 18:35

it's like in comedy and like I I read

  525. 18:39

your book I read Tina's book when I was

  526. 18:41

like in college and starting standup and

  527. 18:43

like I feel like especially when I think

  528. 18:46

to like the beginning when when you're

  529. 18:49

like the first not the first women in

  530. 18:52

comedy but like you're forming a group.

  531. 18:54

Like I feel like my friend group took so

  532. 18:57

much inspiration from you guys of being

  533. 18:58

like, I've, got, my, girls,, you, know what, I

  534. 19:00

    mean? And being like

  535. 19:02

    >> I'll, go, to, the, weird, open, mic, with, you

  536. 19:04

and the whatever, but like carving out

  537. 19:06

that space for yourself and being like

  538. 19:09

you come to us as opposed to like trying

  539. 19:12

to be a part of the other thing that

  540. 19:14

you're like not necessarily invited to.

  541. 19:18

    >> So,, let's, get, into, Okay,, we, we, talked

  542. 19:19

    about your parents. You're in

  543. 19:20

Connecticut. You grow up in Connecticut.

  544. 19:22

And again, you seem like a Manhattan

  545. 19:24

    kid. Congrats.

  546. 19:25

    >> Thank, you.

  547. 19:25

    >> Um,, Connecticut, is, a, strange, state, cuz

  548. 19:27

    it's like, where is it?

  549. 19:29

    >> Who, is, it, happening,

  550. 19:30

    >> right?, Like, Red, Sox,, Yankees,, like, what

  551. 19:33

    do you want?

  552. 19:33

    >> Okay., And, thank, you, for, asking, that., Red

  553. 19:35

    Sox.

  554. 19:36

    >> Red, Sox., I, got, actually, like, absolutely

  555. 19:39

my dad reamed my ass because I put on my

  556. 19:43

boyfriend's Yankees cap. I just thought

  557. 19:45

it would be a little flirty. And I fa

  558. 19:47

picked up a FaceTime for my dad and he

  559. 19:48

was like, "Take that off right now.

  560. 19:50

    >> Take, that, off, right, now., That's, not

  561. 19:51

    okay. You can't do it.

  562. 19:52

    >> No,, that's, not, okay.

  563. 19:53

    >> So,, you're, more, on, the, Boston, side,, but

  564. 19:55

you grow up there and you get to NYU.

  565. 19:58

    >> Yes.

  566. 19:58

    >> Where, is, that, jump, from, you, like, at, the

  567. 20:00

dinner table being funny with your

  568. 20:02

family and deciding I want to get to NYU

  569. 20:05

and like be a performer? How does that

  570. 20:07

    happen?

  571. 20:07

    >> It, So,, I, always, wanted, to, like, perform.

  572. 20:10

I feel like I did the classic thing.

  573. 20:12

    >> Well,, you, were, in, plays.

  574. 20:13

    >> I, was, forcing, I, was, doing, plays.

  575. 20:15

    >> You, were, in, lay, miz.

  576. 20:16

    >> I, was, in, lay, miz., Wow., Yes.

  577. 20:19

    >> What, part?, I, was, Madame, Tinardier., Of

  578. 20:21

    course. Wait, who?

  579. 20:23

    >> She, You, just, said, it, in, a, French, way.

  580. 20:26

    >> Madame, Tinardier., I, was, I, was, She, was

  581. 20:29

sort of Do you know the master of the

  582. 20:32

    house? The his wife.

  583. 20:34

    >> Oh,, the, master, of, the, house, lady., Yes.

  584. 20:35

    >> Okay., Sorry,, I, should, know, her, name.

  585. 20:37

    >> No,, she, is, the, master, of, the, house, lady.

  586. 20:39

    >> You, had, the, comedic, part.

  587. 20:41

    >> Yes,, I, had, the, comedic, part., And, you

  588. 20:42

know, anytime I was in a play in high

  589. 20:44

school, they were like, "That's a witch

  590. 20:47

or the head of the like the prostitute

  591. 20:51

house." Like it was really it was like

  592. 20:53

that was the only parts I was getting

  593. 20:55

cast in. Why do you think that was? Why

  594. 20:57

as a little kid do they cuz I know

  595. 21:00

    >> I, know

  596. 21:01

    >> but, I, but, I, kind, of, know, what, you, mean

  597. 21:02

cuz it's usually the comedic part.

  598. 21:04

    >> Yes., Yes.

  599. 21:05

    >> Why, were, they, like, seeing, some, like, were

  600. 21:07

you did you have like a maturity in that

  601. 21:09

age? Were you just like self- assured on

  602. 21:11

stage?, Do you, know what, I, mean?, Like, not

  603. 21:13

    nervous?

  604. 21:14

    >> I, think, it, was, like, I, was, not, vocally

  605. 21:16

    talented

  606. 21:18

and loud and I think loud and I think

  607. 21:22

    like

  608. 21:24

    >> I, don't, know., I, I, look, I'm, like, it, was

  609. 21:26

always like and you're the little the

  610. 21:29

ratty little whatever. And I'm like okay

  611. 21:32

I really I it cuz at that time I want I

  612. 21:35

was like obviously I want to be

  613. 21:36

Cassette. I want to be Ethan. I want to

  614. 21:38

be like singing the Pretty Little Voice.

  615. 21:40

    >> They, heard, me, sing, three, bars., They

  616. 21:43

    said,

  617. 21:44

    >> "But, you're

  618. 21:44

    >> you're, going, to, speak, the, whole, song."

  619. 21:46

    >> And, they're, they're, usually, the, most

  620. 21:48

boring of the songs. They are. I mean

  621. 21:50

even though Epanine has some great has

  622. 21:52

some great songs. Lame is incredible.

  623. 21:54

    Yeah,

  624. 21:55

    >> they're, bangers., And, And, by, the, way,, the

  625. 21:57

girl who played Epanine in my high

  626. 21:59

school like went on to play Epanine on

  627. 22:02

    Broadway. And I was like

  628. 22:02

    >> "Wow,

  629. 22:03

    >> you, know,, Emily, Bautista,, I, got, to, hand

  630. 22:06

it to you. You were meant for the part.

  631. 22:08

    Voice. Voice of an angel.

  632. 22:09

    >> Incredible.

  633. 22:10

    >> Incredible., So,, I, was, like,, I'm, not

  634. 22:12

    taking it personally.

  635. 22:13

    >> Can, we, talk, for, a, second, about, loud?

  636. 22:15

    >> Loud.

  637. 22:16

    >> Cuz, I'm, I'm, relating., Like,, I, was, a, loud

  638. 22:20

    kid.

  639. 22:20

    >> Yeah.

  640. 22:21

    >> And, there's, something, like, underneath

  641. 22:23

being like a loud young kid. That's kind

  642. 22:26

of can be very exciting, especially if

  643. 22:27

you're like a young woman. Not always.

  644. 22:28

Sometimes people don't like it. They

  645. 22:30

make you feel bad about it. Yeah

  646. 22:32

    >> but, it, is, like, it's, like, carving, out

  647. 22:34

space, like taking up space somehow. And

  648. 22:37

    people saw that in you.

  649. 22:38

    >> Yeah., And, they, were, like,, she's, not

  650. 22:41

afraid to I guess that or they were just

  651. 22:45

literally like we can't get her to shut

  652. 22:46

up. Like just give her this part and

  653. 22:48

maybe she'll lose her voice yelling on

  654. 22:51

stage and then she won't be like

  655. 22:53

annoying at home. But I do think you're

  656. 22:55

right. It's like you have to sort of

  657. 22:57

like be loud first and then figure out

  658. 22:59

how to make it like entertaining as you

  659. 23:02

go. But I think once you like break that

  660. 23:04

    I also like

  661. 23:06

    >> I, feel, like, I've, always, had, like, a, loud

  662. 23:08

laugh which like I've read about like

  663. 23:11

laugh at the table reads at SNL and

  664. 23:13

    whatever and it's like

  665. 23:15

    >> I, think, like, not, being, afraid, to, like

  666. 23:17

bring joy into the space or be like

  667. 23:20

    >> I, don't, know, once, once, you, start

  668. 23:22

shouting you're like I'm not going to

  669. 23:23

talk quiet like it's just you break into

  670. 23:26

that space and then you can

  671. 23:28

    >> refine, what, what, you're, saying, or, how

  672. 23:31

funny it is or whatever. But I think

  673. 23:32

like that instinct was always there.

  674. 23:35

    >> Yeah., And, and, that, brings, you, to, NYU

  675. 23:38

where you kind of join this class of

  676. 23:40

people who are now your friends and

  677. 23:43

successful actors and actresses in their

  678. 23:45

own right who you meet like tell us

  679. 23:47

about coming to NYU like those early

  680. 23:49

days there. I so I think I at first felt

  681. 23:52

like I didn't fit in at all and I had

  682. 23:55

like a really hard time because the

  683. 23:58

acting program was very like serious and

  684. 24:01

    it was very like

  685. 24:03

    >> Shakespeare, and, like, we're, doing, we're

  686. 24:06

like walking around the room and you're

  687. 24:07

a cat and then you're like a chicken and

  688. 24:09

I was like but everyone's like crying

  689. 24:11

while they do it and I'm like what what

  690. 24:14

    am I missing?

  691. 24:15

    >> What, am, I, missing?, The, the, money, is

  692. 24:18

gone. we've paid so I got to do

  693. 24:20

something with this but wow this is

  694. 24:21

crazy like it was that I was scared and

  695. 24:25

    I just felt and

  696. 24:27

    >> do, you, know, what, I, mean, like, it's, like

  697. 24:28

and and you're looking around and

  698. 24:30

everyone's like so locked into it so

  699. 24:31

you're like there's something wrong with

  700. 24:33

    me

  701. 24:33

    >> do, you, think, they, were, locked, into, it, or

  702. 24:35

was it like pure pressure to feel locked

  703. 24:36

    into it cuz

  704. 24:37

    >> now, it, feels, like, a, cult, a, little, where

  705. 24:40

everyone was like I'm crying as the

  706. 24:42

    chicken

  707. 24:44

    >> I'm, feeling, thing, like, you, know, But, I, I

  708. 24:49

felt like, oh, there were a lot of

  709. 24:51

opportunities that the school had, which

  710. 24:54

was like the plays, the the the school

  711. 24:57

did shows that you could audition for. I

  712. 25:00

didn't get into any of those. The school

  713. 25:02

had like uh improv and sketch groups. I

  714. 25:04

didn't get into any of those.

  715. 25:06

    >> Oh,, really?

  716. 25:07

    >> Really?

  717. 25:08

    >> Dang., I, bet, they're, regretting, that.

  718. 25:10

    >> Probably, not., They're, pro, They're

  719. 25:12

probably like, "Well, another year of

  720. 25:15

doing our sketches. I'm really surprised

  721. 25:17

    >> I, didn't, and, I, debris, who, I, met, didn't

  722. 25:21

either and that's when we first met was

  723. 25:23

like at the auditions for those groups

  724. 25:25

    >> sometimes, that's, just, the, best, motivator

  725. 25:28

    >> literally, I, by, the, way, I'm, like, I, always

  726. 25:31

    need whenever like something doesn't

  727. 25:33

work out for me I'm like thank God

  728. 25:35

    whenever I'm like

  729. 25:36

    >> projection, is, God's, protection

  730. 25:37

    >> period, and, also, it's, like, whenever, I'm

  731. 25:41

    flopping I'm not scared it's when I'm

  732. 25:44

doing well or that I'm puppy when I'm

  733. 25:47

    terrified.

  734. 25:47

    >> Okay,, that, is, the, best, way, to, say, it,

  735. 25:50

    Rachel, is that

  736. 25:51

    >> to, flop, and, not, be, scared.

  737. 25:54

    >> To, flop, and, not, be, scared.

  738. 25:55

    >> That's, a, very, powerful, thing., It's, It's

  739. 25:57

a super It's a superpower if you can do

  740. 25:59

    it.

  741. 25:59

    >> Because, I, the, best, things, happen, to, me

  742. 26:02

right after I'm at rock bottom. Like

  743. 26:04

    whenever I'm like rejected hard

  744. 26:06

whenever like I'm like like in love with

  745. 26:09

someone who like is treating me like

  746. 26:11

    garbage, that's when I fly. That's when

  747. 26:13

cuz you sort of like let go of

  748. 26:15

    everything and you're like [ __ ] it. I'm

  749. 26:17

at rock bottom. I don't care. Let's go.

  750. 26:20

    That's be that's a beautiful time. It's

  751. 26:22

    when I'm soaring that I start I'm I'm

  752. 26:23

like I'm soaring. The ground is really

  753. 26:26

far away. I'm going to fall like and

  754. 26:29

then I get in my head and that's when

  755. 26:31

    Yeah.

  756. 26:31

    >> So, you, are, auditioning., You, and, I, are

  757. 26:34

both not making what you want to make.

  758. 26:36

What happens then? Then I think that's

  759. 26:38

when I started being like, "Okay, I have

  760. 26:40

to find my own opportunities." And I

  761. 26:43

think that's sort of when I like started

  762. 26:44

to find my friends and my community and

  763. 26:47

doing stuff on our own. So I started

  764. 26:48

like I started doing standup. Um

  765. 26:51

    >> so, tell, us, about, your, first.

  766. 26:55

    >> Yeah., Cuz, you, were, on, a, date., Is, that

  767. 26:57

    correct?

  768. 26:57

    >> Yeah., So, basically, this, poor, guy, is, like

  769. 27:02

    >> he's, also, in, lay, miz., He

  770. 27:04

    >> was, also, in, lay, miz., No,, I, feel, bad, cuz

  771. 27:06

I'm like every it's like I still know

  772. 27:08

him. He like is um he is like a comedy

  773. 27:12

producer, whatever. Great guy. But he

  774. 27:15

basically we went on like one I I want

  775. 27:18

to call it a date, but it was like

  776. 27:20

really like we went to the dining hall

  777. 27:21

and then he like fingered me. But it was

  778. 27:23

it I'm like that was our date. But he's

  779. 27:26

    a lovely person. I He's a lovely person.

  780. 27:29

That's just college, you know. I'm

  781. 27:32

    >> But, do, you, know, what, I, mean?, Yeah.

  782. 27:34

Sometimes that just happens. But so he

  783. 27:36

was like, "You should do standup. I've

  784. 27:38

been going to open mics. Do you want to

  785. 27:40

come with me to one?" And so wait, and

  786. 27:43

    he was going to perform

  787. 27:44

    >> and, he, performed., He, did, perform.

  788. 27:46

    >> Okay., So, he, was, like, "Do, you, want, to

  789. 27:47

    come watch me perform?"

  790. 27:48

    >> He, was, like,, "Do, you, want, to, come, watch

  791. 27:50

me perform? But do you want to go?

  792. 27:51

    >> Do, you, want, to, go, too, and, try, it?"

  793. 27:53

    >> He, He, encouraged.

  794. 27:54

    >> Got, it., Got, it., Got, it.

  795. 27:54

    >> Shout, out., He, encouraged., So, we, go, to, an

  796. 27:57

open mic and I think I did stand up

  797. 28:00

about like him fingering me like 2 days

  798. 28:02

before. So, I was I was just like I have

  799. 28:05

no experiences other than this. It's

  800. 28:08

like pretty like I'm still like a

  801. 28:09

    freshman. Like I'm like

  802. 28:10

    >> Can, you, tell, us, a, little, bit, more, about

  803. 28:12

what you talked about? Would you be okay

  804. 28:14

    to tell us?

  805. 28:14

    >> Absolutely., Okay.

  806. 28:15

    >> I, Well,, I, this, part, This, is, where, I, got

  807. 28:18

    into something that I think I've I've

  808. 28:21

hopefully grown out of. But I I the

  809. 28:23

fingering was weird. And then my first

  810. 28:26

joke which I think he helped me write

  811. 28:29

was that it was like or maybe I think

  812. 28:31

maybe my friend my friend Moss helped me

  813. 28:34

write this part. Moss Peracone very

  814. 28:36

funny standup and writer on SNL

  815. 28:38

    >> who, I, just, got, to, work, with, recently, cuz

  816. 28:40

I was just there and it was really fun

  817. 28:42

    to watch.

  818. 28:42

    >> He's, lovely., He's, so, funny., So, Moss, and

  819. 28:44

I would do open mics together too. So I

  820. 28:46

think Moss actually helped me write this

  821. 28:48

part of the joke which was that like he

  822. 28:51

was fingering me and it was like trying

  823. 28:52

    to trick a vending machine.

  824. 28:55

    free joke.

  825. 28:56

    >> Great, joke.

  826. 28:57

    >> Great, joke

  827. 28:58

    >> that, I, I, think, all, I, brought, to, the

  828. 29:00

story was like it kind of hurt and then

  829. 29:02

he like wrote helped me write that part.

  830. 29:04

    But I did that

  831. 29:06

    >> and, I, got, like, I, also, it's, like, you, your

  832. 29:08

first open mic you go on stage and

  833. 29:10

you're like also I'm like 18 years old

  834. 29:13

at like a random open mic with like guys

  835. 29:14

from New Jersey and I'm like hi it's my

  836. 29:17

first open mic. So obviously like

  837. 29:19

    everyone it the room was

  838. 29:21

    >> warm

  839. 29:22

    >> warm., The, room, was, warm, warm.

  840. 29:24

    >> Mhm.

  841. 29:24

    >> It, was, toasty., So, I, go

  842. 29:26

    >> filled, with, perverts.

  843. 29:27

    >> Yeah., Totally.

  844. 29:29

    >> Absolutely., So, and, at, the, time, I'm, like

  845. 29:32

    I'm a genius saying a joke I didn't

  846. 29:35

write in a room full of six perverts who

  847. 29:37

are all just like maybe she'll only be

  848. 29:39

here for one week and she'll kiss one of

  849. 29:41

    us.

  850. 29:42

    >> Totally., So, at, the, time, I'm, thinking

  851. 29:44

like I'm crushing. I am crushing. Um, so

  852. 29:49

I do that joke whatever and I get that

  853. 29:51

    like high of performing

  854. 29:54

    >> totally

  855. 29:55

    >> and, then, like, for, the, next, like, two

  856. 29:58

years of open mics I'm really bad

  857. 30:02

    >> but, I, am, like, chasing, that, initial, that

  858. 30:05

    initial high of performance.

  859. 30:07

    >> Yes., And, when, you, were, when, you, were

  860. 30:08

doing standup, like were you feeling

  861. 30:11

like, there, was a, party, that, was, like,

  862. 30:12

    I'm going to be a stand-up, like I'm

  863. 30:13

going to be a stand-up, or did you feel

  864. 30:15

like standup was a tool or like a

  865. 30:18

stepping stone to what you wanted to do

  866. 30:20

which was write, act, direct, all the

  867. 30:21

    stuff you're doing now?

  868. 30:22

    >> I, think, like, a, little, bit, of, both., I

  869. 30:24

think in the beginning I was like, I

  870. 30:26

just want to do whatever I can get my

  871. 30:27

hands on. And like you can do an open

  872. 30:30

    mic for like

  873. 30:32

    >> $5., You, buy, like, a, beer, or, something, and

  874. 30:34

you can do an open mic. So I was like

  875. 30:36

"Okay, I can do this." And I did that. I

  876. 30:41

    did like every student film

  877. 30:45

    >> exercise, that, I, could, do., There, is, like

  878. 30:47

I had like a whole reel of like

  879. 30:50

    >> some, of, the, worst, dialogue, in, history.

  880. 30:53

No, no hate. But it it was really like

  881. 30:56

I'm doing any I would do them like back

  882. 30:58

to back to back and I would like skip

  883. 31:00

class to do all these films. But then

  884. 31:01

    also

  885. 31:02

    >> I, met, talented, filmmakers, that, way., I

  886. 31:04

    met my friend Emma Salman

  887. 31:06

    >> and

  888. 31:07

    >> who, who, directed

  889. 31:08

    >> Shiva, Baby, and, Bottoms

  890. 31:10

    >> and, so, I, was, doing, that, and, then, like, I

  891. 31:13

started writing sketches. I did a sketch

  892. 31:17

together that that's sort of like one of

  893. 31:19

my early memories of us like forming a

  894. 31:22

bond because she was so funny and I was

  895. 31:25

like I I was laughing the entire sketch.

  896. 31:29

completely unusable takes for me. But I

  897. 31:31

was like cracking up at her and then

  898. 31:34

like I wrote a sketch that the these

  899. 31:36

sketches about the babysitters club that

  900. 31:38

she was in and then we performed on each

  901. 31:41

other's shows. So it was like I was

  902. 31:43

slowly like building out the community

  903. 31:46

of like friends. So it was like I met Io

  904. 31:49

    Moss

  905. 31:50

um my friend Katarina who's a writer

  906. 31:53

director Emma. So, it was like I felt

  907. 31:55

like I got to like build out my

  908. 31:59

    community.

  909. 31:59

    >> I, mean,, that's, what, it, kind, of, feels

  910. 32:00

like the 20s are about. Yeah.

  911. 32:02

    >> Is, like, figuring, out, who, is, like, me.

  912. 32:05

    Yes.

  913. 32:05

    >> How, can, we, help, each, other, out?, Like,

  914. 32:07

how can I form some kind of community to

  915. 32:09

    get me through the next

  916. 32:11

    >> x, amount, of, years, like, of, of, trying, to

  917. 32:14

do the thing that I want to do. Yeah.

  918. 32:16

    >> Yeah., Yeah., And, and, when, you, were, in

  919. 32:18

that period in your 20s, like well I

  920. 32:22

mean you just said that you turned 30.

  921. 32:24

    >> I, just, did.

  922. 32:25

    >> What, did, you, do, for, your, 30th, birthday?

  923. 32:27

What did how did you celebrate it?

  924. 32:29

Because I got to tell you my vision of

  925. 32:31

you is that you're partying every night.

  926. 32:35

    >> I, am, wrong, sometimes.

  927. 32:38

But okay. Okay. Let me I so many things

  928. 32:41

to say. First, I just have to say I just

  929. 32:44

do Do you know about your Saturn return?

  930. 32:47

    >> Uh,, not, only, that,, but, I, believe, that

  931. 32:50

I'm going to in just a year or two be

  932. 32:52

    entering my second

  933. 32:54

    >> Oh, my, god.

  934. 32:55

    >> Because, I've, been, doing, research, for

  935. 32:56

this because of your show cuz I love LA

  936. 32:58

which we're going to talk about. And

  937. 33:00

it's all about Saturn's Return, which

  938. 33:02

    you just went through.

  939. 33:03

    >> I, did.

  940. 33:04

    >> And, I, believe, you, go, through, a, second

  941. 33:05

one in I'm 54, but I think you start

  942. 33:07

going through a second one like 56, 57.

  943. 33:09

I have to I could look it up, but I

  944. 33:12

    >> Are, you, Are, you, scared, or, excited?

  945. 33:14

    >> I'm, excited.

  946. 33:15

    >> You're, excited?

  947. 33:16

    >> Very, excited

  948. 33:16

    >> cuz, it, does., I, will, say, it's, nice, back

  949. 33:19

to the rock bottom thing when life sort

  950. 33:22

    of like

  951. 33:23

    >> shakes, you, up, and, you're, like,

  952. 33:25

    >> "Whatever,, let's, rock."

  953. 33:28

    >> How, did, it, shake, you, up?

  954. 33:29

    >> Okay., I

  955. 33:31

I feel like it was like the whole thing

  956. 33:34

is like 3 years long, but there's really

  957. 33:36

    like one month

  958. 33:38

    >> that's, like, super, chaotic, or, for, me

  959. 33:40

there was like a month where that was

  960. 33:42

    like really bad

  961. 33:44

    >> and, I, felt, like, everything, all, happened

  962. 33:46

in one month. But basically like I feel

  963. 33:48

like in my early 20s I was partying

  964. 33:52

every night. I was like very messy

  965. 33:54

chaotic. I was like crying at the bar on

  966. 33:57

the table. Like it was really crazy.

  967. 34:00

    >> Yep.

  968. 34:00

    >> Then, I, feel, like, I, moved, to, LA, and, I

  969. 34:03

like I got really like a little weird

  970. 34:06

and like herdy and like kind of I don't

  971. 34:09

know. I went through this thing where I

  972. 34:11

was just not feeling good in myself.

  973. 34:13

Like the strike was happening. I was

  974. 34:15

really depressed. And I think I also

  975. 34:17

like had a lot of insecurities about

  976. 34:20

    like

  977. 34:22

myself as a writer or creator. like I

  978. 34:24

    didn't think I could like

  979. 34:26

make something on my own and I was

  980. 34:29

    really scared to.

  981. 34:31

    >> And, then, I, think, like, basically, the, the

  982. 34:34

big part of the Saturn return was like I

  983. 34:36

    went through a breakup

  984. 34:38

    >> and, I

  985. 34:40

didn't know about if my show was going

  986. 34:42

to get picked up yet. But in the

  987. 34:44

meantime, I had to sort of say no to

  988. 34:46

    other opportunities, which was really

  989. 34:48

hard for me, especially because I I

  990. 34:50

think I defined myself off of my work

  991. 34:52

and my value off of my work. And so I

  992. 34:55

was like, I have to say no to stuff and

  993. 34:57

like trust my gut that this is going to

  994. 34:59

happen and that I can make something on

  995. 35:01

my own. Um, and when I say on my own

  996. 35:05

literally I made it with amazing room of

  997. 35:08

    writers, amazing co-show runner

  998. 35:09

    directors, blah blah blah

  999. 35:10

    >> of, course., But, you, know,, women, always

  1000. 35:11

feel obliged to say that and they don't

  1001. 35:13

    have to.

  1002. 35:14

    >> But, it, just, it, was

  1003. 35:15

    >> but, but, I, take, it, back., I, [ __ ], take

  1004. 35:18

    it back

  1005. 35:18

    >> because, no,, you're, absolutely, right.

  1006. 35:19

    Nobody does anything alone.

  1007. 35:21

    >> Nobody, does, anything, alone., But, you

  1008. 35:23

    you're you're making a really

  1009. 35:24

interesting point which is like which I

  1010. 35:25

see see this in you and women that

  1011. 35:27

you're coming up with which is this you

  1012. 35:30

know this moment where you have to kind

  1013. 35:32

of decide to take ownership of the stuff

  1014. 35:35

    that you want to make.

  1015. 35:36

    >> Yeah.

  1016. 35:36

    >> And, decide, that, you're, ready, to, do, it.

  1017. 35:38

    >> Yes., Because, no, one's, I, think, like, it's

  1018. 35:41

also like you can't do anything until

  1019. 35:43

you do it. Like it's like I directed an

  1020. 35:45

episode. You just have to direct one day

  1021. 35:48

and be like, "Okay." Like obviously you

  1022. 35:51

prepare and you write you draw the

  1023. 35:53

little pictures all the things. What?

  1024. 35:55

Yeah. Write the list and you go, "I

  1025. 35:57

think the shirt should be blue."

  1026. 35:58

    >> Well,, that's, the, thing, about, directing

  1027. 36:00

and and I want to talk to you about this

  1028. 36:02

because you've been really I love how

  1029. 36:03

you talk about directing and producing

  1030. 36:05

and writing and showrunning which is

  1031. 36:07

    >> you, know,, people, act, like, everything, is

  1032. 36:09

like a secret room. Like we learned this

  1033. 36:11

from Hamilton like that. Like there's a

  1034. 36:13

room where it happens and only certain

  1035. 36:15

people are allowed in it and there's a

  1036. 36:17

language and a vocabulary and only one

  1037. 36:19

way to do something and it keeps people

  1038. 36:20

    out of the room.

  1039. 36:21

    >> Yes., Totally., And, then, you, get, in, the

  1040. 36:23

room and it's like three guys being like

  1041. 36:26

    >> I, think, it, we, should, shoot, it, really

  1042. 36:28

    slow.

  1043. 36:30

    >> I, think, we, should, do, it, really, fast., And

  1044. 36:32

you're like this is all this is what

  1045. 36:34

    they're saying.

  1046. 36:36

    >> This, is, what, they're, saying, in, here.

  1047. 36:37

    >> Totally.

  1048. 36:38

    >> You're, kidding, me., And, they, have, snacks.

  1049. 36:40

They're ordering like three rounds of

  1050. 36:42

coffees to say I think we should shoot a

  1051. 36:44

slower fat. I got pissed actually

  1052. 36:46

honestly the first time I got in there.

  1053. 36:47

    >> It's, incredible, once, you, get, inside, the

  1054. 36:49

    room

  1055. 36:49

    >> and, then, you, get, a, high, and, then, you're

  1056. 36:51

like I'm staying in here and I'm

  1057. 36:53

    ordering 10 coffees and I WE'RE SHOOTING

  1058. 36:56

IT FAST AND then slow. It's

  1059. 36:58

    >> So, you're, going, through, your, Saturn's

  1060. 36:59

    return.

  1061. 37:00

    >> You, come, out, the, other, side, and, you

  1062. 37:02

    greet 30.

  1063. 37:04

    >> Yes.

  1064. 37:04

    >> Do, you, party, on, your, 30th, birthday?

  1065. 37:06

    >> I, do, party, on, my, 30th.

  1066. 37:08

    >> I, do., Sorry., you, I, do, party.

  1067. 37:11

    >> Well,, what, does, that, look, like?

  1068. 37:12

    >> I, went, to, Sicying

  1069. 37:15

    >> for, my, friend's, wedding.

  1070. 37:16

    >> Okay,, great.

  1071. 37:17

    >> And, I, really, partied, there, and, then, I

  1072. 37:20

    stayed there for the week.

  1073. 37:21

    >> Perfect., This, is, what, I, expected,

  1074. 37:23

Rachel. I'm happy to hear this.

  1075. 37:25

    >> And, I, really, I, really, went, off., It, was

  1076. 37:27

great. It was fabulous. And it was good.

  1077. 37:29

It was good because I feel like I've

  1078. 37:30

been working for so long. Like I went

  1079. 37:33

into the hole of making the show and now

  1080. 37:36

I'm out every night. I'll tell you that

  1081. 37:38

I am. I'm going to a concert tonight if

  1082. 37:40

    you want to come.

  1083. 37:41

    >> Where, are, you, going?

  1084. 37:42

    >> I'm, going, Okay., I'm, going, to, see, Do, you

  1085. 37:44

    know that girl Adella?

  1086. 37:46

    >> No.

  1087. 37:47

    >> I, wish, I, did.

  1088. 37:48

    >> She, You, You're, Jenna.

  1089. 37:50

    >> I'm, like, that, song, Sex, on, the, Beat., You

  1090. 37:52

got to get on to that.

  1091. 37:53

    >> Oh, my, god., I'm, so, old., Adella,

  1092. 37:56

    >> we'll

  1093. 37:57

    you

  1094. 38:00

    and I'm I can't wait. And then I'm going

  1095. 38:03

to I just basically I This is the other

  1096. 38:05

thing. Tell me if you do this. when

  1097. 38:07

    >> she's, a, Slovakian, singer, songwriter.

  1098. 38:09

    >> Yes.

  1099. 38:10

    >> Very, cool.

  1100. 38:10

    >> She's, very, cool.

  1101. 38:11

    >> Cool.

  1102. 38:12

    >> Um, but, she, So, I'm, going, to, that, tonight.

  1103. 38:14

But I I do this thing when I'm like

  1104. 38:16

shooting something where it's like you

  1105. 38:17

put off every single person in your

  1106. 38:19

    life. Classic.

  1107. 38:20

    >> You, you, make, promises, you, can't, keep.

  1108. 38:23

    >> Which, is, like, you're, like,, "Yeah,, I, when

  1109. 38:26

    this is over

  1110. 38:28

I am going to be I am going to be out. I

  1111. 38:32

am going to be just going to the club

  1112. 38:35

and then dinner and then we should go on

  1113. 38:36

a hike the next morning really early.

  1114. 38:39

Like I make so many promises and then

  1115. 38:41

it's like you you you get into a debt, a

  1116. 38:44

social debt, but it's actually kind of

  1117. 38:46

fabulous cuz then you just commit to a

  1118. 38:48

    period where you're like

  1119. 38:50

    >> you're, in, that, period, right, now., So

  1120. 38:52

tonight is is it dinner first? I love

  1121. 38:54

talking to people about plans because

  1122. 38:56

    >> I, love

  1123. 38:57

    >> I, don't, want, to, do, them, but, I, want, to

  1124. 38:58

    hear your plans.

  1125. 38:59

    >> I, want, to, know

  1126. 39:00

    >> Yeah., I, want, to, know, what, you're, doing

  1127. 39:01

    tonight.

  1128. 39:01

    >> Okay,, so, the, plan, is, we're, doing, a, group

  1129. 39:04

    dinner.

  1130. 39:05

    >> Amazing., Where?

  1131. 39:06

    >> At, my, boyfriend's, house., We're, ordering

  1132. 39:08

    food.

  1133. 39:08

    >> Fun.

  1134. 39:09

    >> So,, we, have, a, small, group, going.

  1135. 39:10

    >> We're, pregaming.

  1136. 39:11

    >> What, time, is, this?

  1137. 39:13

    >> This, is, probably

  1138. 39:15

    8:00.

  1139. 39:17

    >> [ __ ], That's, dinner.

  1140. 39:19

    >> I, know., I, like, an, early, dinner,, too., But

  1141. 39:21

it's more It's sort of like, you know

  1142. 39:23

if we do dinner too early, then we're

  1143. 39:26

going to get sleepy before the show

  1144. 39:28

    >> right?, So, I, we, got, to, sort, of, what, I'm

  1145. 39:31

thinking instead is like when when it

  1146. 39:32

should be dinner that's when I'll be

  1147. 39:34

    taking a nap.

  1148. 39:35

    >> Yeah.

  1149. 39:36

    >> And, then, but, of, course, I'll, be, sleeping

  1150. 39:37

with my glam on cuz I want to keep it

  1151. 39:38

for the show. So I'll be sleeping like

  1152. 39:40

    this

  1153. 39:41

    >> like, a, soap, opera, star.

  1154. 39:42

    >> Like, a, sober, star., Glam, on

  1155. 39:44

    >> like, this, getting, lipstick, on, the, pillow

  1156. 39:47

    and then I'll jerk awake.

  1157. 39:49

    >> 7:45

  1158. 39:51

    >> Listerine,

  1159. 39:53

    you know, swishing around.

  1160. 39:54

    >> Yes.

  1161. 39:54

    >> Bam., Dinner., People, start, arriving.

  1162. 39:57

    Dinner.

  1163. 39:58

    >> Order, in.

  1164. 39:59

    >> Order, in.

  1165. 40:00

    >> No, cooking.

  1166. 40:01

    >> That, No, cooking., We're, No, cooking, for

  1167. 40:04

that many people. Six. That's crazy.

  1168. 40:08

    >> Cooking, for, six, people.

  1169. 40:09

    >> That's, outrageous.

  1170. 40:10

    >> What, are, you?, Some, kind, of, machine, to

  1171. 40:12

cook for six people? No way.

  1172. 40:14

    >> I, only, know, how, to, make, sweet, potatoes

  1173. 40:15

and ground turkey. And then we're going

  1174. 40:17

to be burping garlic all over the art

  1175. 40:20

hose at the concert. We can't I can't do

  1176. 40:22

    that. No.

  1177. 40:23

    >> So

  1178. 40:23

    >> then, you, eat., Then, we, eat., And, it's

  1179. 40:25

like, you know, drinking a little, maybe

  1180. 40:27

I'm trying on outfits, maybe I'm leaving

  1181. 40:29

    dinner, coming back, presenting an

  1182. 40:30

    outfit to the group.

  1183. 40:31

    >> It's, fun.

  1184. 40:32

    >> Yeah.

  1185. 40:35

    >> Okay., Do, you, do, that?

  1186. 40:37

    >> No,, I, don't., But, I, I, in, general, have, a

  1187. 40:41

    weird relationship to outfits

  1188. 40:43

    >> really

  1189. 40:43

    >> that, I, like, I, and, I, love, and, I'm, very

  1190. 40:46

very intrigued by your relationship to

  1191. 40:48

outfits cuz for me outfits like I don't

  1192. 40:51

    have the feeling like

  1193. 40:53

    >> I, I'll, use, my, friend, my, good, friend, Maya

  1194. 40:55

Rudolph as an example. When Maya Rudolph

  1195. 40:57

gets dressed and she gets to change she

  1196. 40:59

would love to do that what you're doing

  1197. 41:01

like come in and out of the room with

  1198. 41:03

different outfits be like look at my

  1199. 41:04

outfit look at my outfit. That to me

  1200. 41:07

    feels so stressful.

  1201. 41:09

    >> Do, you, know what, you, should, do, it?, Do

  1202. 41:11

    you like to smoke weed?

  1203. 41:12

    >> I, don't, really, smoke, it, anymore,, but, I

  1204. 41:14

    will.

  1205. 41:14

    >> Okay,, for, this, or, it, could, be, glass, of

  1206. 41:17

wine or it could be a little CBD joint

  1207. 41:19

    or whatever.

  1208. 41:20

    >> So,, I'd, rather, weed, over, wine.

  1209. 41:21

    >> Okay., Yeah.

  1210. 41:22

    >> Let's, do, a, Let's, do, a, like, a, gummy.

  1211. 41:24

    >> Let's, do, a, gummy.

  1212. 41:25

    >> Okay., All, right.

  1213. 41:26

    >> You, knock, back, a, gummy.

  1214. 41:27

    >> Okay.

  1215. 41:28

    >> Now,, you, could, I, kind, of, think, it's, good

  1216. 41:30

to do this like on your own

  1217. 41:32

    >> cuz, then, you, and, like, maybe

  1218. 41:34

    >> by, myself.

  1219. 41:35

    >> Yes., start, by, yourself, because, then

  1220. 41:37

you're not, you know, you're not doing

  1221. 41:39

    it for anyone or

  1222. 41:40

    >> you, better, believe, I'll, curb.

  1223. 41:42

    >> I'm, in, my, social, chapter., I'm, free., So,

  1224. 41:45

    >> I'm, already, worried, that, you're

  1225. 41:46

    overbooking yourself. Don't promise

  1226. 41:48

    that.

  1227. 41:48

    >> Okay.

  1228. 41:48

    >> But, I'm, just, saying.

  1229. 41:50

    >> Okay.

  1230. 41:50

    >> It, I, would, say, do, it, in, like, the

  1231. 41:54

daytime. Gummy iced coffee so that

  1232. 41:58

you're kind of your body's fighting

  1233. 41:59

    itself.

  1234. 42:04

    >> Okay., Okay,, I'm, in, my, apartment., It's

  1235. 42:05

blazing sun. Gummy an ice coffee. 2:00

  1236. 42:10

    in the afternoon.

  1237. 42:12

I just cancel all my plans. And what do

  1238. 42:14

I do next? I go to my closet. Go to play

  1239. 42:18

an elevator. Getting really high from

  1240. 42:20

the coffee and then getting really down

  1241. 42:21

    from the gummies.

  1242. 42:24

Then then what do I do? Then what do I

  1243. 42:26

    do?

  1244. 42:27

    >> Music.

  1245. 42:27

    >> Okay., Music., What, do, I, play?, What, do, I

  1246. 42:30

play? I think is like something really

  1247. 42:32

like ethereal fun. Okay. Like like you

  1248. 42:36

know you make me feel like dancing.

  1249. 42:39

    Okay.

  1250. 42:42

    >> I'm, just, telling, you, about, a, Saturday

  1251. 42:44

that I had like a week ago.

  1252. 42:46

    >> Okay., Perfect.

  1253. 42:47

    >> And, then, and, then, you, just, start, trying

  1254. 42:50

    [ __ ] on.

  1255. 42:51

    >> Okay., and, you, throw, stuff, on, the, floor

  1256. 42:53

and you take pictures with stuff and

  1257. 42:55

it's like and maybe like halfway through

  1258. 42:57

you stop you order some food and it's

  1259. 42:59

like and by the way you're not picking

  1260. 43:01

up any of the clothes till the next day

  1261. 43:03

when you're not high in the gummy

  1262. 43:04

    >> anymore., This, is, going, to, be, really, hard

  1263. 43:05

    for me.

  1264. 43:06

    >> Okay,

  1265. 43:06

    >> but, that's, okay., But, that's, okay.

  1266. 43:08

    >> It's, part, of, it, is, it's, just, like

  1267. 43:10

    there's no like there's no I'm cleaning.

  1268. 43:12

    There's no I'm organizing. You're

  1269. 43:14

playing. You're trying stuff on. You're

  1270. 43:17

and you and you should also have a

  1271. 43:20

mirror with really good light. This is

  1272. 43:21

why I'm saying the daytime cuz in my

  1273. 43:22

house I have a mirror that only looks

  1274. 43:24

good at a certain time. So you can take

  1275. 43:27

this and you know it for like your your

  1276. 43:30

vibe, you know, like but this is this is

  1277. 43:33

    just for

  1278. 43:34

    >> this, is, actually, really, helpful, because

  1279. 43:38

it is about like what you're talking

  1280. 43:40

about is about play like not just not

  1281. 43:43

    making everything so serious.

  1282. 43:44

    >> Not, making, everything, so, serious., And

  1283. 43:46

it's like you can you can take pictures

  1284. 43:48

of stuff or lots of times I'll do videos

  1285. 43:49

of me like walking and then walking to

  1286. 43:52

the camera and back and then I text them

  1287. 43:54

all to my sisters and I go like heart

  1288. 43:56

    which ones you like.

  1289. 43:57

    >> Okay., This, feels, like, a, very, sister

  1290. 43:59

    thing.

  1291. 43:59

    >> Yeah.

  1292. 44:00

    >> Yeah., Like, what, sisters, do, for, each

  1293. 44:02

    other?

  1294. 44:02

    >> Yes., And, then, you, can, get, feedback, and

  1295. 44:05

then they can be like drop the vest

  1296. 44:07

    keep the scarf

  1297. 44:09

    >> right?

  1298. 44:09

    >> You, know,

  1299. 44:10

    >> and, do, you, take, that, feedback?, Do, you, go

  1300. 44:12

    >> depends

  1301. 44:12

    >> depends

  1302. 44:13

    >> depends, because, it's, like, sometimes, I'm

  1303. 44:15

like you don't know this is a really

  1304. 44:17

good outfit and then and sometimes you

  1305. 44:19

by the way sometimes you'll try on an

  1306. 44:21

outfit that you created that day

  1307. 44:23

    >> that, this, is, that's, inventing, outfits.

  1308. 44:25

    >> This, feels, like, level, two.

  1309. 44:26

    >> I, feel, like, I'm, at, level, two, right, now.

  1310. 44:28

    I just need to start

  1311. 44:30

by taking the gummy during the day.

  1312. 44:32

    >> Just, start, by, taking, the, gum, just, start

  1313. 44:34

by getting high in the morning and then

  1314. 44:36

    work your way up.

  1315. 44:37

    >> Work, your, way, up, to, all, of, this.

  1316. 44:46

    Okay. You and your sisters.

  1317. 44:49

    >> Yes.

  1318. 44:50

    >> Make, me, think, about, the, women, that, you

  1319. 44:52

have like kind of like your chosen

  1320. 44:54

sisters. Like you said, I owe. And

  1321. 44:56

    another chosen sister is Molly.

  1322. 44:59

    >> Yes., Love, Molly.

  1323. 45:01

    >> Molly, Gordon, who, we, spoke, to, before, this

  1324. 45:04

    interview.

  1325. 45:05

    >> Love., I, love, her., I, just, talked, to, her

  1326. 45:07

last night. you. She said you guys talk

  1327. 45:09

every day. She called you her wife.

  1328. 45:12

    >> Wife,, sister., We're, like, we're, it's

  1329. 45:15

which is weird, but we like five

  1330. 45:18

    different things.

  1331. 45:19

    >> For, people, who, like, are, getting, because

  1332. 45:21

I think like there's a lot of people who

  1333. 45:23

are getting to know your work, Molly's

  1334. 45:24

work, IO's work, like you are this

  1335. 45:27

rising class, I think, of really really

  1336. 45:29

    talented artists and filmmakers and

  1337. 45:33

showrunners and writers and and actors.

  1338. 45:36

But Shiva Baby was a a film that you and

  1339. 45:39

Molly did together that was this teeny

  1340. 45:42

tiny film that really like exploded and

  1341. 45:45

took off. Can you talk a little bit

  1342. 45:46

    about the path of that?

  1343. 45:47

    >> Yes., So, that, was, a, crazy, experience, and

  1344. 45:51

it's crazier now looking back at it. Um

  1345. 45:55

because so it was first a short film

  1346. 45:58

that Emma Seligman wrote and directed

  1347. 46:00

that I was in and it got into Southby

  1348. 46:03

and after it got into Southby, Emma was

  1349. 46:05

like I I still remember it was like Emma

  1350. 46:07

and I like met up at a dig in um for a

  1351. 46:12

    dig in.

  1352. 46:13

    >> What's, a, dig, in?

  1353. 46:14

    >> Oh, my, god.

  1354. 46:16

    >> At, a, dig, in.

  1355. 46:18

    >> A, dig, in., It's, a, fast, casual, lunch

  1356. 46:20

    place. It's like a

  1357. 46:21

    >> Oh,, a, dig, in, is, a, restaurant., It's, sort

  1358. 46:24

    It's like a sweet green. It's like a

  1359. 46:26

    sister of a sweet green.

  1360. 46:27

    >> Uh, sweet, green, was, brought, up, earlier

  1361. 46:29

because Molly was like, "That's a nice

  1362. 46:30

place to go to the bathroom. They're

  1363. 46:32

    usually nice at Sweet Green."

  1364. 46:33

    >> They, They'll, let, you.

  1365. 46:34

    >> So,, dig, in., Is, that, an, LA, thing?

  1366. 46:36

    >> No,, it's, a, New, York, thing.

  1367. 46:37

    >> My, god,, I, don't, know, it., Okay,, good, to

  1368. 46:38

    know.

  1369. 46:39

    >> I, think, they, have, them, here,, too., But

  1370. 46:40

there was really a chapter where it was

  1371. 46:42

    big. Okay.

  1372. 46:43

    >> In, New, York, when, we, were, in, college., So,

  1373. 46:46

we meet at a digin. We're catching up.

  1374. 46:48

And Emma is like, I'm going to make

  1375. 46:50

Shiva Baby into a feature. And we were

  1376. 46:53

also that's also the same day that we

  1377. 46:55

came up with the loose idea for Bottoms

  1378. 46:58

    and we started writing it.

  1379. 46:59

    >> Wow.

  1380. 46:59

    >> So, we're, writing, Bottoms, while, Emma's

  1381. 47:01

also writing Shiva Baby. And like

  1382. 47:03

    basically it was like

  1383. 47:04

    >> this, like, slow, process, of, building, the

  1384. 47:07

movie out and it's like no one wants to

  1385. 47:10

make a first time filmmakers movie. It's

  1386. 47:13

like so impossible to get people behind

  1387. 47:15

you. Um and it was sort of like this

  1388. 47:17

this game of like we're trying to cast

  1389. 47:20

the movie. we don't have the money for

  1390. 47:22

the movie. Um, I wanted to shout out

  1391. 47:24

Rian Jones who was one of the producers

  1392. 47:27

who was like the first person to like be

  1393. 47:30

like, I'm giving you guys money to make

  1394. 47:32

this movie and and gave like a big uh

  1395. 47:35

chunk of money. It was like a super

  1396. 47:37

indie movie. I think the budget was

  1397. 47:39

    around like 200k, but it's like that's

  1398. 47:42

really hard to raise that money when you

  1399. 47:45

are college students and all you have is

  1400. 47:48

a short film tour. So, it's like I

  1401. 47:50

remember like talking with Emma and

  1402. 47:52

we're like trying to cast the movie

  1403. 47:53

without the money, get the locations

  1404. 47:56

but get the funding at the same time.

  1405. 47:57

So, it was all of that. And when Molly

  1406. 48:02

signed on to do it, it felt like, oh my

  1407. 48:05

god, like she's legit. because we had

  1408. 48:07

seen both seen her in Books Smart and

  1409. 48:09

been like she is so funny

  1410. 48:13

    >> right?

  1411. 48:13

    >> So, funny., And, like, she's, a, real, actress.

  1412. 48:17

    >> I, mean, I, that's, exactly, what, she, was

  1413. 48:19

talking about. Like she said when you

  1414. 48:20

guys met you were like you're a real

  1415. 48:22

actress and she help us. Yeah. But but

  1416. 48:25

it I relate because when you come

  1417. 48:27

through the door of like comedy

  1418. 48:30

    >> Yeah., You, often, feel, like, that's, that

  1419. 48:34

just kind of like you just you've always

  1420. 48:35

that's the door you've always come

  1421. 48:36

    through.

  1422. 48:37

    >> Yeah.

  1423. 48:37

    >> And, it, takes, a, minute, to, figure, out, that

  1424. 48:41

you know everyone is talented at a lot

  1425. 48:44

    of things.

  1426. 48:44

    >> Yeah.

  1427. 48:45

    >> Um, so, were, you, feeling, then, insecure

  1428. 48:48

about your acting or anything or

  1429. 48:51

    >> Definitely, you, were., I, was, because, I, had

  1430. 48:54

never been I was all of a sudden the

  1431. 48:56

    lead of a film

  1432. 48:58

    >> that, wasn't, fully, funded, yet, and, didn't

  1433. 49:00

have a location. Like it was so like it

  1434. 49:04

was like I think we got the rest of our

  1435. 49:05

funding like a day before we shot the

  1436. 49:07

    movie.

  1437. 49:08

    >> And, basically, we, go, to, film, the, first

  1438. 49:10

scene and it's me and Molly and I clam

  1439. 49:13

    up and I just whisper.

  1440. 49:16

    >> Oh,, you, whisper.

  1441. 49:18

    >> I, whispered,

  1442. 49:20

    >> right?

  1443. 49:21

cuz you know sometimes when we're really

  1444. 49:23

nervous we get like very sleepy and

  1445. 49:25

    tired and quiet.

  1446. 49:26

    >> It's, really, and, I'm, like, no, one, can, tell

  1447. 49:29

if I'm doing a bad job if they can't

  1448. 49:32

hear me or see me. So it's like the

  1449. 49:36

first thing we film is that scene where

  1450. 49:38

we like run into each other. where we

  1451. 49:40

talk for the first time at the Shiva and

  1452. 49:42

I'm like it's good to see you and it's

  1453. 49:45

like Emma's like cut and so then Emma

  1454. 49:48

like pulls me aside because they're an

  1455. 49:50

amazing friend and director and they're

  1456. 49:52

    like so

  1457. 49:54

    we can't hear anything

  1458. 49:57

we can't hear a word that you're saying

  1459. 49:59

and I'm like totally did this in private

  1460. 50:02

thank god and was and did it really

  1461. 50:04

nicely but was like I think just like

  1462. 50:06

maybe have a little more um voice And I

  1463. 50:10

was like, "Totally, we go again." And

  1464. 50:12

I'm like, "So good to see you." And I it

  1465. 50:16

was I was I was like sweating.

  1466. 50:18

    >> This, is, so, interesting, because, we

  1467. 50:19

started talking about like little Rachel

  1468. 50:22

on stage being loud and then you have

  1469. 50:25

this moment you're like, "Okay, now I'm

  1470. 50:26

a real actor and now I'm going to get

  1471. 50:29

    very quiet.

  1472. 50:30

    >> I'm, going, to, do, I'm, actually, going, to, do

  1473. 50:31

the It's like I'm not going to pitch my

  1474. 50:33

fast ball. I'm going to do the opposite

  1475. 50:34

    of what I do." Well

  1476. 50:35

    >> I'm, going, to, drop, it., I'm, gonna, drop, the

  1477. 50:37

ball on the floor and go I I like the

  1478. 50:40

mound. Let's We'll keep the baseball.

  1479. 50:43

    >> Your, dad, and, the, Red, Sox, would, want, to

  1480. 50:44

know that you can extend that baseball

  1481. 50:46

    metaphor. So it would be

  1482. 50:47

    >> on, the, mound.

  1483. 50:48

    >> On, the, mound, on, the, mound, or, sports.

  1484. 50:51

    >> Yeah., So, um, so, you're, But, that's, so

  1485. 50:53

interesting. So then and then what

  1486. 50:54

    happens?

  1487. 50:55

    >> And, then, I, think, Molly, basically, was

  1488. 50:58

    like

  1489. 50:59

    >> Molly, can, do, she, like, charmed, the, pants

  1490. 51:04

off of me basically and was like she

  1491. 51:06

just started improving and talking to me

  1492. 51:09

and talking before we were rolling

  1493. 51:11

    >> and, I, didn't, feel, like, I, was, in, a, scene

  1494. 51:13

anymore. I felt like I was like talking

  1495. 51:16

to her and flirting with her but feeling

  1496. 51:18

like and it just as I it clicked for me

  1497. 51:22

and like between Molly and Emma. Emma

  1498. 51:24

coming and then it was like we got into

  1499. 51:26

a group and then Emma came over and was

  1500. 51:28

like whispering stuff in my ear of like

  1501. 51:30

really like make her work for it on this

  1502. 51:32

one or like like give in on this one

  1503. 51:34

    giggle on this one and

  1504. 51:36

    >> let's, move, the, camera, slower, on, this

  1505. 51:38

    one.

  1506. 51:38

    >> Let's, camera, slower, on, this, one., Fast.

  1507. 51:41

Really fast. And then Molly was like

  1508. 51:44

improving and like I just felt like

  1509. 51:47

    basically

  1510. 51:49

they just but I just felt like so like

  1511. 51:54

brought into the space and then I felt

  1512. 51:56

like I know how to do this. But it was

  1513. 51:59

    like I think I I just I just watched

  1514. 52:02

    both of them like

  1515. 52:03

    >> shine, and, like, bring, me, into, their, like

  1516. 52:10

like artistry is like a big word, but I

  1517. 52:12

kind of felt like they both were like

  1518. 52:14

"Come here. You you can do this." And

  1519. 52:16

like I just it just Anyways, it really

  1520. 52:19

like opened everything up for me and it

  1521. 52:22

    was really special.

  1522. 52:23

    >> Very, cool., Yes.

  1523. 52:24

    >> Now, Molly, had, a, question, for, you.

  1524. 52:26

    >> Okay., And

  1525. 52:28

um the first one was uh please have um

  1526. 52:34

Rachel tell the fingering story which

  1527. 52:36

    you already told naturally.

  1528. 52:37

    >> I, did, it, on, my, own., Wow., Huge.

  1529. 52:40

    >> Incredible., Um, so, thank, you, for, that.

  1530. 52:42

And then this and and she said basically

  1531. 52:47

said, you know, when she met you that

  1532. 52:49

what she was so drawn to and what I feel

  1533. 52:52

drawn to you right now, I'm feeling the

  1534. 52:55

same thing, which is your like the great

  1535. 52:57

audacity of here's what I want to do. I

  1536. 52:58

want to do this. I want to do this. Like

  1537. 53:00

like ambition, not being afraid of it

  1538. 53:04

like feeling like you want to take up a

  1539. 53:06

lot of space. and she said that

  1540. 53:08

confidence like has that all has have

  1541. 53:11

you always had that? The question is

  1542. 53:12

like where did you where do you think

  1543. 53:14

    that came from?

  1544. 53:15

    >> It's, interesting, because, I, I, look, back

  1545. 53:17

at myself at that time and I think I was

  1546. 53:20

like I was very insecure and anxious but

  1547. 53:24

at the same time I did always have this

  1548. 53:26

feeling of like I have to do this

  1549. 53:29

    >> and, I, think, I, think, that's, from, my

  1550. 53:31

family for sure. Like I think it's like

  1551. 53:34

I there was like this thing of like okay

  1552. 53:37

if you're going to do it then do it. And

  1553. 53:39

I think like in my mind I was like I

  1554. 53:42

can't even entertain the possibility of

  1555. 53:45

not doing this because I don't

  1556. 53:48

    >> have, any, other, plan., I, don't

  1557. 53:50

    >> there's, never, a, job, you, would, want, to, do

  1558. 53:51

instead of this. Did you ever think

  1559. 53:53

about like another major or another job

  1560. 53:56

    other than insurance sales?

  1561. 53:58

Yeah. I think now that I'm here, I'm

  1562. 54:01

like, I would love to do marketing. I

  1563. 54:03

    love marketing.

  1564. 54:04

    >> Wait,, what, do, you, mean?

  1565. 54:05

    >> I, just, love, marketing., I, just, started

  1566. 54:06

getting on marketing calls and I'm like

  1567. 54:09

    >> these, girls, are, fabulous., They're, just

  1568. 54:11

so I'm just like I love I love

  1569. 54:13

    marketing.

  1570. 54:14

    >> You, like, you, like, figuring, out, how, to

  1571. 54:16

get the message out. Yes. You're very

  1572. 54:18

good at marketing. You're very good at

  1573. 54:19

Tik Tok. You're very good at Twitter.

  1574. 54:21

    >> And, you, better, believe, I, have, I, have

  1575. 54:23

    sounds saved for us.

  1576. 54:25

    >> For, our, Tik, Tok.

  1577. 54:26

    >> Yeah., if, you're, down., Um,, I, have, a

  1578. 54:30

question, a Tik Tok question for you.

  1579. 54:32

How do you get your Tik Toks to move so

  1580. 54:35

fast? You make it slow. I'll show you.

  1581. 54:38

Wait, do you have you ever do slow-mo so

  1582. 54:40

    then it speeds it up?

  1583. 54:42

    >> No,

  1584. 54:42

    >> we'll, do, that, today.

  1585. 54:43

    >> You, shoot, it, in, slow-mo.

  1586. 54:45

    >> You, shoot, it., Yes., So,, it, shoot, It

  1587. 54:48

    shoots in So, the

  1588. 54:50

    >> Are, we, talking, about, a, cap, cut

  1589. 54:52

    situation? No. Fantastic.

  1590. 54:53

    >> I, won't, I, won't, do, that, to, you., I, I, will

  1591. 54:56

not do that to you. Someone's laughing.

  1592. 54:58

    >> I, Claire, Claire, is, laughing, because, I

  1593. 55:01

had her help me with doing a what I've

  1594. 55:06

always wanted to do, which is green

  1595. 55:08

screen. Basically, I'm talking in front

  1596. 55:09

    of a picture.

  1597. 55:10

    >> That's, what, I, want, to, do, and, I, don't

  1598. 55:11

    know HOW TO DO IT.

  1599. 55:12

    >> LEARNED., I, CAN, SHOW, YOU., I, CAN, SHOW, YOU

  1600. 55:14

TODAY. I can show you. I just found out

  1601. 55:16

how Claire taught me and now I can teach

  1602. 55:18

    you.

  1603. 55:18

    >> Okay,, we, might, we, might, have, to, do, that

  1604. 55:21

is talk about ourselves in front of a

  1605. 55:23

    picture.

  1606. 55:23

    >> In, front, of, a, picture., We, can, even, take

  1607. 55:25

a photo of us and then we can outfit.

  1608. 55:32

    It's so fun.

  1609. 55:33

    >> It's, so, Why, is, it, fun?, Cuz, I, think, it's

  1610. 55:35

fun, too. Why do you think it's fun?

  1611. 55:36

    >> I, feel, like, I'm, playing, with, clay, and

  1612. 55:40

dough. Like I feel like I'm like

  1613. 55:41

    play-doh. I feel like I'm doing crafts.

  1614. 55:44

And then afterwards, you get to watch it

  1615. 55:46

over and over and go, I made that. I did

  1616. 55:48

that just now. It's so fun.

  1617. 55:50

    >> It, is, so, fun.

  1618. 55:51

    >> And, the, noises, and, the, colors., It's, just

  1619. 55:54

    the best.

  1620. 55:55

    >> But, it, makes, sense, to, me, because, you

  1621. 55:56

definitely have this sense of knowing

  1622. 56:00

how to exist in that space. And it kind

  1623. 56:02

of comes back to you just like being

  1624. 56:03

    authentically yourself, which is just

  1625. 56:05

hard to teach. You, you know

  1626. 56:07

    >> you, just, got, to, rock, it., I, guess

  1627. 56:08

    >> you, got, you, do.

  1628. 56:09

    >> But, sometimes, things, happen., I, don't

  1629. 56:11

know if you've had this where it's like

  1630. 56:14

you you're like, "Okay, I'm being

  1631. 56:16

    authentically myself. I'm being

  1632. 56:17

    authentically myself." And then

  1633. 56:20

you either, these are two things that

  1634. 56:22

have happened to me. You're either being

  1635. 56:24

    authentically yourself and everyone's

  1636. 56:26

    like, we hate it.

  1637. 56:27

    >> Yeah.

  1638. 56:27

    >> And, you're, like,, I, should, be, someone

  1639. 56:29

else. I should be someone else. Or

  1640. 56:32

    >> you're, kind, of, being, a, version, of

  1641. 56:34

yourself and everyone's like, we love

  1642. 56:36

it, [ __ ] And then you change a little.

  1643. 56:39

    I'm never going to stop being a [ __ ]

  1644. 56:40

but sorry, something else. Sure. You

  1645. 56:42

    know, you're like, I'm messy. I'm this.

  1646. 56:44

Whatever. And then you go into a

  1647. 56:45

different zone and then you're like, but

  1648. 56:46

they still like that. I should keep

  1649. 56:48

doing that. Yes. But in reality, you're

  1650. 56:50

    changing.

  1651. 56:51

    >> You, are, the, generation, that, has, grown

  1652. 56:52

up. Like, when did you get your first

  1653. 56:54

    phone?

  1654. 56:54

    >> When, I, was, in, middle, school.

  1655. 56:56

    >> Yeah., And, you've, had, a, lifetime, of, being

  1656. 56:58

    online.

  1657. 56:59

    >> We, talked, about, this, a, lot, when, we, were

  1658. 57:00

creating the show. I think there's like

  1659. 57:02

a lot of times people like look at like

  1660. 57:05

I'm going to say my generation, I'm I'm

  1661. 57:08

like the millennial cusp. So, I'm not

  1662. 57:10

I'm not claiming I'm not claim

  1663. 57:14

    millennial. I claim a millennial cuz I

  1664. 57:16

feel real like I feel a bit of both. Do

  1665. 57:20

you, know what, I, mean?, When, we, start

  1666. 57:21

getting into Skippy Toilet, I get lost.

  1667. 57:23

    >> Sure.

  1668. 57:24

    >> You, know, what, I, mean?, I'm, like,, what's

  1669. 57:25

going on? I didn't do kindergarten on

  1670. 57:27

Zoom., So,, I, you, know what, I, mean?, Like, I

  1671. 57:30

have I I didn't have what is this

  1672. 57:32

called? Um when your brain fully

  1673. 57:34

    develops.

  1674. 57:35

    >> Oh,, um, your, frontal, lobe.

  1675. 57:37

    >> My, frontal, lobe., I, think, my, frontal, lobe

  1676. 57:40

developed like what time does that

  1677. 57:42

    happen? Halfway through co

  1678. 57:44

    >> weird, time, to, have, your, frontal, lobe

  1679. 57:47

    closed during co

  1680. 57:48

    >> during, co, but, I, felt, it

  1681. 57:52

    >> snatched., You, were, like, snatched

  1682. 57:53

    >> snatched., Yes., Yeah., And, and, and, so, I, I

  1683. 57:58

didn't have to go through like formative

  1684. 57:59

    development developmental years during

  1685. 58:02

co or whatever. Like I think there's

  1686. 58:05

something to do with that that I don't

  1687. 58:07

have. Um, but the the we were just

  1688. 58:13

talking about 67. I found out I'm in

  1689. 58:15

    group seven from Tik Tok.

  1690. 58:16

    >> I, found, out, I, was, in, group, seven.

  1691. 58:18

    >> Group, seven.

  1692. 58:19

    >> What, does, that, mean?

  1693. 58:20

    >> I, don't, know., And, so, if, I, was, fully

  1694. 58:22

Jenzie, I would. Claire, explain it to

  1695. 58:24

me cuz she is cuz she's 25.

  1696. 58:25

    >> Okay., Claire, will, explain, and, she'll

  1697. 58:27

show us how to do the green screen.

  1698. 58:28

    >> How, to, do, the, green, screen.

  1699. 58:30

    >> Okay., Let's, talk, about, LA.

  1700. 58:31

    >> I'm, sorry, I'm, talking, so, I, could, just

  1701. 58:34

same. and and and you have a great cast

  1702. 58:38

and you shoot it in LA and do you love

  1703. 58:42

    LA?

  1704. 58:42

    >> I, do, love, LA.

  1705. 58:43

    >> Okay., What, can, you, help, me?, Because, I'm

  1706. 58:46

actually genuinely it's I'm coming up on

  1707. 58:48

like year 15 or 16 of being here and I

  1708. 58:51

go back and forth between LA and New

  1709. 58:52

York and I'm not loving LA right now. LA

  1710. 58:55

is crushing me a little bit. Okay. I

  1711. 58:57

think I want to go back to the East

  1712. 58:58

Coast. Like I really, you know, my kids

  1713. 59:00

are almost out of school. So, I'm like

  1714. 59:01

feeling this giant pull and I'm trying

  1715. 59:03

to stay with LA because LA has been very

  1716. 59:05

    good to me.

  1717. 59:06

    >> Yeah.

  1718. 59:06

    >> And, it's, there's, a, lot, about, it., I, love

  1719. 59:09

California. There's a lot about Los

  1720. 59:10

Angeles. I have a lot of friends here.

  1721. 59:11

I've had great memories here. I've made

  1722. 59:13

a lot of stuff I'm really proud of here.

  1723. 59:15

But I'm just like, what do you love

  1724. 59:17

about LA? And can you help me love it

  1725. 59:19

    too?

  1726. 59:20

    >> Yes., I, like, LA, most, in, the, winter.

  1727. 59:23

    >> I, do,, too., It's, my, favorite., January, to

  1728. 59:26

    April is heaven

  1729. 59:28

    >> cuz, everywhere, else, is, freezing.

  1730. 59:29

    Everyone else Everywhere else is

  1731. 59:30

freezing. Meanwhile, we're going to the

  1732. 59:32

beach in an Ugg and a hoodie. Beach in

  1733. 59:35

    an Ugg and a hoodie.

  1734. 59:37

    >> Yeah.

  1735. 59:37

    >> And, you're, getting

  1736. 59:39

    this. You maybe Okay. Morning.

  1737. 59:41

    >> Mhm.

  1738. 59:42

    >> It's, a, Saturday.

  1739. 59:42

    >> Okay.

  1740. 59:43

    >> Again,, weed, gummy, coffee., Sorry.

  1741. 59:46

    >> You, don't, have, to., You, could, do

  1742. 59:47

    something else. Who's driving?

  1743. 59:50

    Somebody's boyfriend. Somebody's

  1744. 59:51

    boyfriend.

  1745. 59:51

    >> Somebody's, boyfriend, is, driving., Not, us.

  1746. 59:53

    Or you're getting an Uber.

  1747. 59:54

    >> But, ideally,, it's, like, someone's

  1748. 59:56

boyfriend is driving. Like the boyfriend

  1749. 59:58

of the friend group. He's He's get He's

  1750. 59:59

    driving everywhere.

  1751. 1:00:00

    >> Great., I, like, this., Yeah.

  1752. 1:00:01

    >> And, you've, got, a, playlist., You, guys

  1753. 1:00:04

    stop. You got bagels.

  1754. 1:00:05

    >> Okay., Not, good, bagels, though, in, LA.

  1755. 1:00:08

    Yeah. Okay.

  1756. 1:00:09

    >> Go, to, Courage.

  1757. 1:00:09

    >> Okay., Great.

  1758. 1:00:10

    >> You, go, to, Courage, or, there's, a, place, in

  1759. 1:00:12

    Burbank called Hanks. Underrated. I'm

  1760. 1:00:14

actually giving away my spot, but I know

  1761. 1:00:16

    you [ __ ] aren't going to Burbank, so

  1762. 1:00:18

    it's fine. Um, it's okay.

  1763. 1:00:21

    >> I, work, there,, so, I'm, going., But

  1764. 1:00:23

    >> you, worked, at, Hanks?

  1765. 1:00:24

    >> I, work, No,, I, work, at, the, lot.

  1766. 1:00:26

    >> Oh,, you, work, at, the, right, nearby., I, was

  1767. 1:00:27

like, "Oh my god, you also work at

  1768. 1:00:28

    Hanks." Okay, I work

  1769. 1:00:29

    >> I, have, two, jobs., I, have, three.

  1770. 1:00:31

    >> So,, you, get, your, bagel.

  1771. 1:00:32

    >> So,, you, get, your, bagel, and, now, you're

  1772. 1:00:34

eating your bagels in the car or you

  1773. 1:00:36

save them. You get to the beach. You run

  1774. 1:00:38

on the sand. You're just sitting on the

  1775. 1:00:39

sand in like jeans and an Ugg and a

  1776. 1:00:42

    sweater.

  1777. 1:00:43

    >> Yeah., I, love, I, love, the, beach, in, a

  1778. 1:00:45

    sweater.

  1779. 1:00:46

    >> Beach, in, a, sweater., It's, completely

  1780. 1:00:47

empty cuz no one else has this good of

  1781. 1:00:49

an idea except for us. And And you're

  1782. 1:00:52

just like vibe. you're having a beach

  1783. 1:00:54

day, but you're having a winter beach

  1784. 1:00:55

day and you can make it into a thing

  1785. 1:00:57

like you could then then you could go

  1786. 1:00:59

like up to Tanga Canyon and you could

  1787. 1:01:02

buy a set of tarot cards for your friend

  1788. 1:01:04

and go on a hike over there. There's

  1789. 1:01:06

like some really nice hikes in Malibu.

  1790. 1:01:08

There's like a you could go to the pier.

  1791. 1:01:12

You could get like um seafood at Broad

  1792. 1:01:15

Street Oyster Company, but like you make

  1793. 1:01:17

a day in the winter that you couldn't do

  1794. 1:01:19

    somewhere else.

  1795. 1:01:20

    >> I, completely, agree., You, know what, I, I

  1796. 1:01:22

think Los Angeles, California in the

  1797. 1:01:24

winter is where it really shines.

  1798. 1:01:26

    >> Is, really, where, it, shines.

  1799. 1:01:27

    >> The, rest, of, the, year, is, tough, for, me.

  1800. 1:01:29

    >> So,, what, if, what, if, you, stuck, around?, We

  1801. 1:01:34

do like beach day in the day weed gummy

  1802. 1:01:36

    closet.

  1803. 1:01:37

    >> Yeah., And, it's, like,, by, the, way,, we're

  1804. 1:01:39

    in bed at 7:00.

  1805. 1:01:42

    >> I, don't, believe, you.

  1806. 1:01:43

    >> We, will, be, if, we're, starting, a, day, with

  1807. 1:01:45

    a weed gummy

  1808. 1:01:48

plans tonight. I know, but that's cuz

  1809. 1:01:50

    I'm in a social chapter.

  1810. 1:01:51

    >> But, in, January, and, February,, in, January

  1811. 1:01:54

in a social chapter, we're hibernating

  1812. 1:01:56

but we're hibernating with our friends.

  1813. 1:01:58

    >> Okay., Okay.

  1814. 1:01:59

    >> And, our, community,, we're, we're

  1815. 1:02:00

    hibernating with like six people.

  1816. 1:02:02

    >> I, I

  1817. 1:02:03

    >> Or, three, if, that, feels, better.

  1818. 1:02:05

    >> That, actually, really, did, make, me, like

  1819. 1:02:07

Los Angeles more. What you just said

  1820. 1:02:10

    >> this, is, the, thing., New, York., Bam., You're

  1821. 1:02:12

confronted with a new chapter or an

  1822. 1:02:14

event or whatever and it's it's thrown

  1823. 1:02:16

in your face and it's fabulous and it's

  1824. 1:02:18

going like wake up. You just met this

  1825. 1:02:20

    person on the street.

  1826. 1:02:21

    >> LA,, you, have, to, do, it, a, little, for

  1827. 1:02:23

yourself, but you get to sit down in

  1828. 1:02:25

your room one day delusional. Me this

  1829. 1:02:28

    alone.

  1830. 1:02:29

    >> Hi., In, my, in, my, closet., New, era., Let's

  1831. 1:02:33

    go.

  1832. 1:02:33

    >> Okay., Um,, lightning, round.

  1833. 1:02:36

    >> Lightning, round., I'm, walking, in.

  1834. 1:02:40

    >> Have, you, done, Iawaska?

  1835. 1:02:42

    >> No., Should, I?

  1836. 1:02:43

    >> No.

  1837. 1:02:43

    >> Okay.

  1838. 1:02:45

    >> Um, Okay., Are, cigarettes, making, a

  1839. 1:02:48

    comeback?

  1840. 1:02:49

    >> They, are., They, are., But, we, have, to, stop.

  1841. 1:02:54

    But they are.

  1842. 1:02:54

    >> They, are.

  1843. 1:02:55

    >> And, they're, good., But, also,, who, can

  1844. 1:02:57

blame us? Look at what is happening.

  1845. 1:02:59

    >> I, know.

  1846. 1:03:00

    >> I, know., And, they, were, they, were, feeding

  1847. 1:03:03

they were feeding people the vapes at

  1848. 1:03:05

    12.

  1849. 1:03:05

    >> I, know., The, vapes, hopefully, are, taking, a

  1850. 1:03:08

    break, but cigarettes are back.

  1851. 1:03:10

    >> Well,, the, the, cigarettes, are, people

  1852. 1:03:11

trying to wean off the vape.

  1853. 1:03:13

    >> Oh,, that's, so, brutal., That's, like, heroin

  1854. 1:03:16

    to not take your oxy

  1855. 1:03:19

    >> heroin, to, to, pill, to, heroin, pills.

  1856. 1:03:22

    >> It's, hard, out, there., Okay., Album, you're

  1857. 1:03:24

    listening to right now?

  1858. 1:03:25

    >> I've, been, listening, a, lot, to, the, Addison

  1859. 1:03:26

    album.

  1860. 1:03:27

    >> It's, an, album, that, makes, me, feel, very

  1861. 1:03:29

    like

  1862. 1:03:30

    >> free., It, makes, me, feel, like, my, mom's

  1863. 1:03:32

friend who always wore yoga pants who

  1864. 1:03:34

    was like really chic.

  1865. 1:03:35

    >> Mhm., and, sexy, and, like, sexy, kind, of, a

  1866. 1:03:38

little sleepy and in a dream

  1867. 1:03:39

    >> and, so, free., I, was, like,, "Yeah,, yeah,

  1868. 1:03:42

    >> Addison, feels, very, like, free, to, me."

  1869. 1:03:44

    >> Um,, is, there, a, person's, career, path, that

  1870. 1:03:46

    you look at and admire?

  1871. 1:03:48

    >> Definitely., I'm, not, being, a, suckup.

  1872. 1:03:53

    Can't you can't see.

  1873. 1:03:55

    >> I'm, not, allowed., You're, sitting, right, in

  1874. 1:03:57

front of me. What if I was like, I need

  1875. 1:03:59

    AN IDEA. BAM.

  1876. 1:04:01

WHAT IF BEFORE THIS podcast someone

  1877. 1:04:03

pulled you aside and said like when Amy

  1878. 1:04:04

asks that you you have to say her. She

  1879. 1:04:07

    gets really upset.

  1880. 1:04:08

    >> She, gets, really, upset.

  1881. 1:04:10

    >> That, would, be, crazy, if, they, said, that.

  1882. 1:04:13

No, I I just I do want to say like Okay

  1883. 1:04:17

so I'm sorry. I'll just say it and then

  1884. 1:04:18

we can cut it and genuinely and then

  1885. 1:04:20

I'll say someone else. Okay. But I I do

  1886. 1:04:24

really want to say like genuinely like

  1887. 1:04:27

you have made a difference in my life

  1888. 1:04:29

going to pursue comedy and going to to

  1889. 1:04:32

like be funny and be loud and be bold

  1890. 1:04:36

like and also be kind. Like I feel like

  1891. 1:04:40

when I read your book, I was like there

  1892. 1:04:42

    was

  1893. 1:04:44

    the ability to be like

  1894. 1:04:47

both like bold and loud but also like

  1895. 1:04:50

    vulnerable and sensitive.

  1896. 1:04:52

    >> I, think, is, some, that, like, sometimes, it

  1897. 1:04:55

feels like you're not allowed to have

  1898. 1:04:56

    both.

  1899. 1:04:57

    >> And, I, I, I, feel, like, you, need, both, and

  1900. 1:05:01

you should be able to. And that's

  1901. 1:05:03

something that I get from you or like am

  1902. 1:05:06

inspired by from you and like I think

  1903. 1:05:09

like the women you your community like

  1904. 1:05:11

Maya Rudolph, Tina Fay, all of them.

  1905. 1:05:15

    >> Thank, you,, Rachel., That's, really, nice.

  1906. 1:05:17

    >> So, that's, true., But, now, do, you, want, me

  1907. 1:05:20

to say someone else? Okay. Um uh

  1908. 1:05:26

    um

  1909. 1:05:28

I Britney Murphy is an actress that I

  1910. 1:05:31

really look up to. I think she's an

  1911. 1:05:33

incredible actress. Um or was it an

  1912. 1:05:36

    incredible actress? She's just someone

  1913. 1:05:38

    who like I saw her

  1914. 1:05:40

    >> in, like, immediately, like, when, I, saw, her

  1915. 1:05:43

in Clueless I was like she just has

  1916. 1:05:46

something special and she's very she was

  1917. 1:05:48

very true to herself. She was, you know

  1918. 1:05:50

I she hosted SNL my first season there

  1919. 1:05:54

and she I remember her being like really

  1920. 1:05:56

    kind,

  1921. 1:05:58

really super hardworking, very open to

  1922. 1:06:01

ideas and you're right, she had like a

  1923. 1:06:03

    sparkly interesting quality about her

  1924. 1:06:05

and she could do a lot of things really

  1925. 1:06:07

    well.

  1926. 1:06:07

    >> Yes., Like, I, feel, like, had, so, much, range

  1927. 1:06:11

    and like

  1928. 1:06:12

    >> I, don't, know., I, felt

  1929. 1:06:15

like there's certain people where it's

  1930. 1:06:17

like it's like the character wouldn't be

  1931. 1:06:19

the character if it wasn't you playing

  1932. 1:06:21

it and I feel like she has that

  1933. 1:06:23

    >> which, is, really, special.

  1934. 1:06:24

    >> When, was, the, last, time, you, cried?

  1935. 1:06:27

    >> Um

  1936. 1:06:29

yesterday because I this is the other

  1937. 1:06:31

thing. So I didn't cry for a speed round

  1938. 1:06:34

but I'll say it really fast.

  1939. 1:06:35

    >> That's, okay., You, I, like, speed, rounds, to

  1940. 1:06:36

    go slow.

  1941. 1:06:37

    >> To, go, slow.

  1942. 1:06:40

I didn't cry for like a long time

  1943. 1:06:42

because I was so like stressed about the

  1944. 1:06:44

job and I was trying to take it

  1945. 1:06:45

seriously and be locked in and I was

  1946. 1:06:47

like there's no time to cry. There's no

  1947. 1:06:48

time to cry. And then I think now that

  1948. 1:06:50

I'm in my social era and I have like a

  1949. 1:06:52

little space to breathe like the lid is

  1950. 1:06:54

    coming off

  1951. 1:06:56

    >> so, I'm, just, crying, more, freely.

  1952. 1:06:59

    >> Yesterday, I, sort, of, had, a, little, bit, of

  1953. 1:07:01

a manic episode. This goes back to the

  1954. 1:07:02

closet thing where I remembered a shirt

  1955. 1:07:04

    from 3 years ago

  1956. 1:07:07

    that I haven't I just was like, "Wait a

  1957. 1:07:09

    second.

  1958. 1:07:09

    >> Where, is, it?

  1959. 1:07:10

    >> Where, is, that?", And, then, I, started, like

  1960. 1:07:12

rumaging through my closet. Not in a fun

  1961. 1:07:15

way. Node weed gummy. Just like

  1962. 1:07:17

    panicked.

  1963. 1:07:17

    >> Yeah.

  1964. 1:07:18

    >> Panicked., Texting, people, pictures, of, the

  1965. 1:07:20

shirt being like, "Have you seen this?"

  1966. 1:07:22

Texting my mom being like "Is this at

  1967. 1:07:24

home?" She's like, "What?" Like that.

  1968. 1:07:27

    >> What, do, you, think, the, shirt, meant?, What

  1969. 1:07:29

was it? When you thought of the shirt

  1970. 1:07:31

where did you where had you worn it?

  1971. 1:07:33

What did it mean to you? What did it

  1972. 1:07:34

    represent?

  1973. 1:07:35

    >> I, think, it, was, that, I've, been, living, in

  1974. 1:07:37

my place for too long and I used to live

  1975. 1:07:39

there with my ex-boyfriend and I live

  1976. 1:07:41

moved around to Airbnbs before I lived

  1977. 1:07:43

in, that, place, and, all, of a, sudden, I, was

  1978. 1:07:46

just like where's all my stuff and who

  1979. 1:07:48

am I and then I started to cry.

  1980. 1:07:50

    >> Yes., I, think, that, material, I, think, that

  1981. 1:07:53

    objects can do that.

  1982. 1:07:54

    >> Yes., And, then, the, last, question, is,, what

  1983. 1:07:57

are you listening to, watching? What do

  1984. 1:08:00

you do when you want to laugh? What do

  1985. 1:08:02

what kind of stuff do you do when you

  1986. 1:08:04

like need a break? Like when you want to

  1987. 1:08:07

get out of your head and just feel good

  1988. 1:08:10

    >> and, feel, good., I, have, a, couple, friends

  1989. 1:08:12

and my sisters where it's like we send

  1990. 1:08:14

each other like Tik Toks that are like

  1991. 1:08:16

really weird and then like I catch up on

  1992. 1:08:19

all the Tik Toks that like my friends or

  1993. 1:08:21

my sister sent me and I like feel like

  1994. 1:08:24

I'm watching like their show kind of the

  1995. 1:08:27

fee that they've curated for me and then

  1996. 1:08:29

I reply to all of them like haha this is

  1997. 1:08:31

us when we're in the car with mom. This

  1998. 1:08:33

was us when we would go on a walk drink

  1999. 1:08:35

whatever and that feels that's fun and

  2000. 1:08:38

silly for me. It's funny. It's like we

  2001. 1:08:40

do this at our work at at our office at

  2002. 1:08:42

Paperkite. We like show each other our

  2003. 1:08:44

feeds to see what where everyone's heads

  2004. 1:08:46

    are at.

  2005. 1:08:47

    >> Yeah.

  2006. 1:08:47

    >> And, you, know,, sometimes, my, kids, will, be

  2007. 1:08:49

like, "Mom, your feed is really sad."

  2008. 1:08:51

You know, like I'm like, "You're right.

  2009. 1:08:52

    It's too sad."

  2010. 1:08:53

    >> Like,, but, by, the, way,, sometimes, that's

  2011. 1:08:56

good because then you can go, "I'm in a

  2012. 1:08:57

    sad period right now."

  2013. 1:08:58

    >> Totally., I'm, not, in, my, social, chapter.

  2014. 1:09:00

    >> I'm, not, in, my, social, chapter.

  2015. 1:09:01

    >> So,, like,, what, is, it?, What, is, I'm, just

  2016. 1:09:03

as we finish, can you remember any Tik

  2017. 1:09:06

Tok that you enjoy that is funny?

  2018. 1:09:08

    >> Yes.

  2019. 1:09:08

    >> Oh, my, god., Amazing., You, want, to, show, it

  2020. 1:09:10

    to me?

  2021. 1:09:10

    >> I, would, love, to., Let, me, Let, me, go

  2022. 1:09:11

    through.

  2023. 1:09:12

    >> I, don't, even, know, how, to, get, Tik, Tok, on

  2024. 1:09:13

    my laptop.

  2025. 1:09:14

    >> I, was, going, to, show, you, on, my, phone.

  2026. 1:09:16

    >> Yeah., Yeah., Okay., Here, we, go., What, are

  2027. 1:09:18

    we watching?

  2028. 1:09:19

    >> I'm, just, going, through, I, mean,, let's

  2029. 1:09:20

    look.

  2030. 1:09:21

    >> Okay., So,, how, would, you

  2031. 1:09:24

    >> How, would, you, describe?, Okay., This, is

  2032. 1:09:27

    incredible. Yes, this is incredible.

  2033. 1:09:30

This is a video of um it says

  2034. 1:09:33

"Congratulations. It's a girl." And then

  2035. 1:09:35

it says the girl and the girl's walking

  2036. 1:09:37

around wearing a giant pig head holding

  2037. 1:09:40

    a baseball bat

  2038. 1:09:42

    >> to, a, creepy, little, song

  2039. 1:09:43

    >> to, a, creepy, song., And, she, looks, awesome.

  2040. 1:09:46

    >> She, This, diva, is, I'm, like, she, knows, who

  2041. 1:09:49

    she is already.

  2042. 1:09:50

    >> Yes.

  2043. 1:09:51

    >> Yeah.

  2044. 1:09:51

    >> That's, very, good., That's, very, very

  2045. 1:09:54

funny. Okay. And then we've got

  2046. 1:09:57

    >> priest, DJ.

  2047. 1:09:59

    >> A, priest, DJ.

  2048. 1:10:03

You just feel like he has a hobby and a

  2049. 1:10:06

passion. Like, do you know what I mean?

  2050. 1:10:07

Like, I'm like, he's having fun.

  2051. 1:10:09

    >> He, is, having, fun., Yeah., All right,, Ra,

  2052. 1:10:11

I'm, going to, have, you, sit, back, in, your

  2053. 1:10:12

chair so we I can properly say thank you

  2054. 1:10:15

    >> for, coming, and, doing, this.

  2055. 1:10:17

    >> Thank, you, so, much, for, having, me., This

  2056. 1:10:19

    was a damn delight.

  2057. 1:10:21

    >> This

  2058. 1:10:22

Thank you so much, Rachel Senate. That

  2059. 1:10:24

was so fun. you are a delight and so

  2060. 1:10:27

funny and charming and I could have

  2061. 1:10:28

talked to you all day and um you know

  2062. 1:10:32

Polar Plunge is presented by Visible.

  2068. 1:10:46

So let's get into this plunge as we

  2069. 1:10:48

finish up this episode. We talked a lot

  2070. 1:10:49

today about Saturn's return. And if you

  2071. 1:10:52

don't know what that is, it's basically

  2072. 1:10:54

this period in astrology that occurs um

  2073. 1:10:57

around the ages of like 20, late 20s

  2074. 1:11:00

late 50s, and late 80s. And it's when uh

  2075. 1:11:04

the planet Saturn returns returns to the

  2076. 1:11:06

same position that it was in when you

  2077. 1:11:08

were born. So, we all went through it or

  2078. 1:11:10

some of us went through it or are going

  2079. 1:11:12

to go through it in our 20s. I'm just

  2080. 1:11:13

here to say I'm looking forward to the

  2081. 1:11:15

next return for me, the next change. Um

  2082. 1:11:19

    I don't know what's around the corner.

  2083. 1:11:21

If life has taught me anything, it's

  2084. 1:11:23

that I cannot predict what is going to

  2085. 1:11:25

happen. But I look forward to the first

  2086. 1:11:30

    human robot

  2087. 1:11:33

    marriage on TV

  2088. 1:11:36

    and um

  2089. 1:11:38

that we will be we will have run out of

  2090. 1:11:41

    water and

  2091. 1:11:44

we'll be drinking other things during

  2092. 1:11:46

that return. So, um, uh, but if anyone's

  2093. 1:11:50

going through Saturn's return right now

  2094. 1:11:51

in their 50s, write in and let me know

  2095. 1:11:54

how it's going for you, babe. Can't

  2096. 1:11:55

wait. Okay. Um, today's Polar Plunge was

  2097. 1:11:58

    presented by Visible. It's oneline

  2098. 1:12:00

    wireless on Verizon's 5G network for $25
