Kate McKinnon on Good Hang with Amy Poehler

The Hang, in Short

Adie Bryant opens by admitting if she played cello, everyone would know about it immediately. "You'd know it, babe. You'd know it. Day one." Meanwhile, Kate McKinnon casually reveals she plays piano AND cello, paints, and now does woodworking and homesteading, all while being one of SNL's greatest sketch performers. The contrast is perfect. Adie and Amy bond over Kate's mysterious introvert energy, how she and Adie shared an SNL office starting in 2012 and gave each other permission to leave parties early. They made those girl group music videos together at the Douglas House, including "Twin Bed" and "Backcom Ballers." Adie's favorite Kate move? Performing brilliantly all week, then completely changing everything live at air, leaving Adie thinking "this bitch is letting it rip" while standing right beside her. Amy's pumped to talk homesteading, The Roses, and the second Millisent Quib book.

  40. 1:41

    >> We're, talking, to, you, from, Los, Angeles.

  41. 1:44

    >> Yeah,, that's, where, I, am., That's, where

  42. 1:46

    you live now.

  43. 1:47

    >> I, know., I, know., It's, weird.

  44. 1:49

    >> 80.

  45. 1:51

I had a moment today where I was like I

  46. 1:53

was just excited about talking to you

  47. 1:56

    and just thinking about

  48. 2:00

I know this is sound very basic, but

  49. 2:02

just like the women of SNL like just

  50. 2:05

like you know there's there's not there

  51. 2:07

hasn't been as many as you think.

  52. 2:10

    >> No,, totally.

  53. 2:11

It's It's like a major crew of cool

  54. 2:15

    stars and girls.

  55. 2:17

    >> It's, true., Like, I, think, you, and, I, were

  56. 2:20

at a photo shoot and somebody I feel

  57. 2:22

like we were at the same photo shoot

  58. 2:24

when someone said the number of cast

  59. 2:26

members of SNL and it wasn't a lot.

  60. 2:31

    >> Totally., Also,, I, I, don't, I, felt, this, at

  61. 2:33

the 50s where like then when you have

  62. 2:35

kind of everyone in the room not

  63. 2:37

counting the hosts you're kind of like

  64. 2:39

this is little like this is a little

  65. 2:41

    group you know.

  66. 2:42

    >> Yeah., Like, I, I, got, a, I, got, a, laptop, here

  67. 2:45

so I'm going to see how many cast

  68. 2:47

    members

  69. 2:49

have been on SNL but yeah.

  70. 2:52

    >> Do, you, have, a, guess, first?, I, jelly, bean

  71. 2:54

    jar guess.

  72. 2:55

    >> Okay., Yeah., Let's, guess, before, Okay., I

  73. 2:57

    won't look.

  74. 2:59

    Three

  75. 2:59

    >> say, like

  76. 3:02

    >> 140., Is, that, wrong?

  77. 3:05

    >> Yes., 167.

  78. 3:08

    >> Come, on.

  79. 3:09

    >> That's, the, blackbox, theater,, honey.

  80. 3:11

That's just a full blackbox theater.

  81. 3:14

    >> You, always, see, everything, in, theater

  82. 3:16

    sizes. That's the stadium.

  83. 3:21

    >> But, yeah,, but, I, was, thinking, about, like

  84. 3:23

    it's it is it's a it's a it's a great

  85. 3:26

group. It's like like of which I'm very

  86. 3:29

proud to be a part of and I know you are

  87. 3:31

    too.

  88. 3:31

    >> Same., Oh, my, god., Yeah., It's, like, very

  89. 3:33

overwhelming to me if I think about it

  90. 3:36

    at all.

  91. 3:36

    >> I, know., Me, too., And, uh, and, you, and, Kate

  92. 3:40

    McKinnon, our guest today

  93. 3:42

    >> were, there, at, the, same, time, and, the, the

  94. 3:45

people especially the women that you are

  95. 3:47

there with at the same time means means

  96. 3:49

a lot. So tell everybody when did you

  97. 3:52

guys start? When did you start? And were

  98. 3:55

you starting at the same year or when

  99. 3:57

    did what year?

  100. 3:57

    >> Yeah., Well,, she, had, kind, of, a, weird

  101. 4:00

thing where she started like five shows

  102. 4:03

at the end of the previous season.

  103. 4:05

    >> Maya, Rudolph, did, that, too., Maya, started

  104. 4:07

at like the end of a season

  105. 4:10

    >> which, that, seems, like, so, stressful, to

  106. 4:12

me. I don't I kind of don't know how she

  107. 4:14

did it cuz she also like came in alone

  108. 4:16

in that moment. But I think Kate and I

  109. 4:19

we shared an office and also just we

  110. 4:23

both are like scared and I think we both

  111. 4:27

were also like um we like are both

  112. 4:31

extroverts for our jobs, but I think

  113. 4:33

we're both kind of secretly like

  114. 4:34

introverts who like to be quiet and

  115. 4:38

hidden. And so we were we bonded over

  116. 4:42

    that. I think you know

  117. 4:43

    >> it's, funny, you, say, that., That, was, one, of

  118. 4:44

the questions I had for her today is how

  119. 4:46

    she managed

  120. 4:49

being in such an extroverted job as an

  121. 4:52

obvious introvert cuz I really find her

  122. 4:54

    to be a genuine introvert.

  123. 4:56

    >> Yeah., I, mean,, I, think, in, some, ways, like

  124. 5:00

it's part of her genius is like she's

  125. 5:02

almost like a recluse who has to go and

  126. 5:06

have like time, but then it's so

  127. 5:10

fruitful. Like I I mean once like one of

  128. 5:14

the first times I went to her apartment

  129. 5:16

I was like oh my god what are all these

  130. 5:17

cool paintings and she was like a I did

  131. 5:19

this you know and I was like what you

  132. 5:22

know and same like or we would be

  133. 5:24

writing a sketch and then she would be

  134. 5:25

like well get a keyboard and then like

  135. 5:28

be playing a full and you're like wait

  136. 5:30

you play the piano and then like she was

  137. 5:33

like well I do play the cello too like

  138. 5:35

it just she is like a she is like a

  139. 5:38

    sneaky freak.

  140. 5:40

who has a million skills and talents.

  141. 5:43

Kind of like a savant kind of thing. And

  142. 5:47

    >> that's, why, she, she's, like, mysterious, in

  143. 5:49

    that way. I think

  144. 5:50

    >> she, is, she, definitely, is, like, an, onion.

  145. 5:52

    Like she and and

  146. 5:55

it also not to make it about me, but I'm

  147. 5:57

feeling such shame about the fact that

  148. 5:59

if I knew how to play the cello, you

  149. 6:01

    would know it, babe.

  150. 6:03

You'd know it. You'd know it. Day one.

  151. 6:08

No, I same. Everywhere I go, I'd be

  152. 6:10

like, well, I do cello, but I do piano

  153. 6:12

too, you know, and I paint a little on

  154. 6:16

the side. But anyway, let's get back to

  155. 6:17

you. Like I would it would be on my

  156. 6:19

    >> Well,, I, guess, I'm, sorry., I'm, one, of the

  157. 6:20

greatest sketch comedians of all time

  158. 6:22

too, on that's just like the other thing

  159. 6:24

I do. And I can build tables and garden

  160. 6:27

    and like, you know

  161. 6:29

    >> and, I'll, take, a, I'll, take, a, grande

  162. 6:31

    latte please.

  163. 6:34

I know there's she is and I have to say

  164. 6:38

80y I find this with you too both of you

  165. 6:41

    guys have a very calm

  166. 6:43

um energy that's like draws you in you

  167. 6:47

neither one of you you're very like come

  168. 6:50

    hither

  169. 6:52

    come hither

  170. 6:53

that is what everyone always says about

  171. 6:55

me that I'm sexy kind of come hither

  172. 6:59

    vibe

  173. 6:59

    >> you, are, babe, because, you, both, are, like

  174. 7:02

there's not a lot of push.

  175. 7:04

    >> There's, not, a, lot, of, push.

  176. 7:06

    >> You, know,, I, think, we, really, helped, each

  177. 7:08

other in that way because like

  178. 7:11

    >> I, you, know,, especially, when, you, get, to

  179. 7:13

SNL, it's so overwhelming. It's like so

  180. 7:15

    cool.

  181. 7:16

    >> And, I, think, sometimes, we, both, would, have

  182. 7:19

the instinct of like, is it okay for me

  183. 7:22

to leave this party and go home? And we

  184. 7:24

often for each other were like, I would

  185. 7:26

    like to.

  186. 7:27

    >> Let's, go., you, know,, we, gave, each, other

  187. 7:31

permission to like be the ones to go

  188. 7:34

    first basically.

  189. 7:35

    >> That's, actually, good.

  190. 7:36

    >> That, was, really, helpful, at, times,, you

  191. 7:38

    know. Yeah.

  192. 7:39

    >> Yeah.

  193. 7:40

    >> But, I'm, so, honored, to, be, thought, of, as

  194. 7:42

come hither. That is like that might be

  195. 7:44

my new like cello like come hither.

  196. 7:47

    >> Miss, Paula, thinks, I'm, come, hither.

  197. 7:52

Cut to your cosmetic brand. Come hither.

  198. 7:55

Come hither baby. And you're like, and

  199. 7:58

then you're like, where is where is it

  200. 7:59

    being sold? I'll never tell.

  201. 8:02

    [Music]

  202. 8:03

    [Laughter]

  203. 8:06

Before I get to your question for Kate

  204. 8:09

what's the first stuff you did together

  205. 8:11

and wrote together? You know, one of the

  206. 8:13

first things I think we really started

  207. 8:16

like putting our heads together on stuff

  208. 8:18

were those like girl music videos that

  209. 8:20

we would do kind of like

  210. 8:22

    >> uh, Twin, Bed,, I, think,, was, one, of, the

  211. 8:25

first ones. And then we did like Backcom

  212. 8:28

Ballers and a couple after that. But

  213. 8:29

that was like one of our first like we

  214. 8:31

both were like we like music and let's

  215. 8:35

    try this, you know.

  216. 8:36

    >> Did, you, shoot, them, in, the, at, the, Douglas

  217. 8:38

    house?

  218. 8:40

    >> Yes., So, some, I, felt, like, I, like, our

  219. 8:43

generation was some of the last to still

  220. 8:45

go to the Douglas House cuz they don't

  221. 8:47

go there anymore. For people listening

  222. 8:48

the Douglas House was just like a big

  223. 8:50

house about 45 minutes outside of the

  224. 8:52

city where if you watch in the '9s and

  225. 8:54

2000s, every commercial was shot at

  226. 8:56

every fake commercial was shot at. Mitz

  227. 8:57

gay like all the uh oops I crapped my

  228. 9:01

    pants all those were there

  229. 9:03

    >> and, like, for, our, generation, it, was, like

  230. 9:05

lower lower back tattoo remover and like

  231. 9:08

the Roomba that went up your pants and

  232. 9:10

and it was and and just so many mornings

  233. 9:14

like super tired at the Douglas house

  234. 9:16

    >> completely, also, like, I've, I, would, lay, in

  235. 9:20

their rooms as if they were my own just

  236. 9:23

so rudely like I would never do that if

  237. 9:26

I was shooting in someone's house now

  238. 9:27

but at that time I was like, I got to

  239. 9:29

lay on the floor in here on someone's

  240. 9:32

couch or bed. I don't know. You got to

  241. 9:34

know how anything works. So, I was like

  242. 9:38

    our space.

  243. 9:39

    >> And, also,, I, just, like, what, I, love, about

  244. 9:43

watching you on the show and all the

  245. 9:45

women of SNL and Kate too is

  246. 9:49

just like never worried when you

  247. 9:53

perform. like never always feeling super

  248. 9:56

relaxed that you're in control of what

  249. 9:58

you're doing that you have like a deep

  250. 10:00

    sense of play and like

  251. 10:03

something natural does happen I think is

  252. 10:05

the long the longer you're there which

  253. 10:07

is just like you get a good case of like

  254. 10:09

    the [ __ ] it's like who cares like let's

  255. 10:10

    just try [ __ ]

  256. 10:11

    >> 100%

  257. 10:12

    >> and, you, and, Kate, as, seniors, were, really

  258. 10:15

    fun together

  259. 10:16

    >> well, we, were, like, doing, bad, behavior

  260. 10:19

    basically

  261. 10:21

    um

  262. 10:21

    >> like, what, what, was, your, bad, Well,, just, I

  263. 10:24

feel like she I mean she's the number

  264. 10:26

one culprit of this in my time at SNL

  265. 10:29

which was she would basically perform so

  266. 10:32

funny during the week, so funny during

  267. 10:34

rehearsal. And then at dress or I mean

  268. 10:36

at air, it was just something you had

  269. 10:39

never seen before. And I would be, you

  270. 10:42

know, like eye to eye with her or

  271. 10:44

    whatever. And I'd be like, "This [ __ ]

  272. 10:46

is letting it rip." And I'm just like at

  273. 10:50

    her mercy

  274. 10:51

    >> you, know?, So, fun.

  275. 10:52

    >> It's, a, thrill,, you, know.

  276. 10:54

    >> Well,, I'm, excited, to, talk, to, her, today

  277. 10:55

    and also like a little um I'm I'm I'm

  278. 10:58

intrigued by Kate always because Kate is

  279. 11:01

like has a million hobbies and interests

  280. 11:05

and she is, you know, she's not on as a

  281. 11:08

person. She's not like a she's not like

  282. 11:11

you can actually go pretty deep and go

  283. 11:13

into these crevices of her mind. So, I'm

  284. 11:16

excited to get there. But what do you

  285. 11:17

think? Do you have any question for her

  286. 11:20

today that you think she might want to

  287. 11:22

    be asked or

  288. 11:24

you know, um, a story she might want to

  289. 11:27

tell or anything you think you'd want to

  290. 11:29

    know?

  291. 11:30

    >> Well,, it's, funny, cuz, I, feel, like, knowing

  292. 11:33

her, I'm like, there's no question she

  293. 11:35

    wants to be asked.

  294. 11:36

    >> I, I, I've, already, heard, that, she's, like

  295. 11:38

she told someone I know she was like

  296. 11:40

"Amy's going to look into my soul, and I

  297. 11:43

    don't want that."

  298. 11:45

She doesn't want to do this interview.

  299. 11:47

    She's She's going to be

  300. 11:48

    >> He, wants, to, do, no, interviews,, by, the

  301. 11:50

    way. I know. Okay, I'm I'm stalling. I

  302. 11:53

guess my question is like what's her

  303. 11:56

    perfect

  304. 11:59

    >> day, of, solitude,, which, might, include

  305. 12:01

like an indoor activity, probably an

  306. 12:06

outdoor activity, knowing her, and also

  307. 12:09

like a meal she would make just for

  308. 12:11

herself. I feel like that's like where

  309. 12:14

    she's in her flow state.

  310. 12:17

    And I'm like, what's she doing? What's

  311. 12:19

her dream version of that? Or even, you

  312. 12:22

know, how she spends her time like that.

  313. 12:24

    >> That, is, such, a, good, question, because

  314. 12:28

asking somebody about what their, you

  315. 12:31

know, quote unquote kind of perfect day

  316. 12:33

tells you so much about them. And

  317. 12:37

and I definitely feel like Kate's

  318. 12:39

perfect day is a solo day.

  319. 12:42

    >> I, which, I, like, respect, massively., You

  320. 12:45

know, that's a fantastic question. Wait

  321. 12:47

I feel like there's one last question

  322. 12:48

you should ask Kate. This is just a

  323. 12:50

loose one, but ask her what she used to

  324. 12:52

    carry her hair extensions in.

  325. 12:58

    >> Don't, know, what, the, answer, might, be,, but

  326. 12:59

    I think she might remember

  327. 13:03

what she used to cart those around in.

  328. 13:07

    >> Perfect., Can't, wait., All right,, Adid,

  329. 13:10

thank you so much for getting on. It's

  330. 13:12

so great to see you. Yeah

  331. 13:14

    >> your, come, hither, attitude, is, it, just

  332. 13:17

drew me in from minute one, babe. Hello.

  358. 14:26

    >> Oh, my, god., Wait,, McKinnon.

  359. 14:30

    >> Wait,, what's, going, on, with, this, water?

  360. 14:36

    What is this water?

  361. 14:38

    >> Um,, this, is

  362. 14:40

    >> Talk, to, me, about, this, jug.

  363. 14:42

    >> Do, you, try, to, get, through, this, a, day

  364. 14:43

    once a day?

  365. 14:44

    >> I, try., I, put, it, away, for, months, at, a

  366. 14:46

time and then I say, "Where's where's my

  367. 14:50

    jug?"

  368. 14:51

    >> Oh, my, god., How, many, gallons, is, in, here?

  369. 14:53

    >> This, is, one, gallon., Actually,, this, is

  370. 14:55

not full, but you can see how that

  371. 14:58

    feels.

  372. 14:58

    >> This, is, nice.

  373. 14:59

    >> Yeah.

  374. 15:00

    >> And, um, Do, you, try, to, get, a, gallon, a, day?

  375. 15:02

    No,

  376. 15:03

    >> I, do., I, mean,, when, I'm, doing, when, I'm

  377. 15:05

    when I'm being

  378. 15:07

    >> good, and, cool., Yeah.

  379. 15:08

    >> That's, why, your, skin, is, so, good., It's

  380. 15:11

    this gallon jug.

  381. 15:12

    >> Uh, it's, Thank, you.

  382. 15:15

    >> Um, Yeah., No,, it's, good., Uh, because, it

  383. 15:19

weighs 25 lbs one full. So, you're

  384. 15:22

getting bit whatever this is. And um

  385. 15:27

it's really good in a zoom because if

  386. 15:30

    your zoom is flagging

  387. 15:33

    >> and, then, you, bring, this, into, frame

  388. 15:37

    >> without, introing, it., Um, you're, that's

  389. 15:41

    another five minutes

  390. 15:43

    >> material, for, your, zoom.

  391. 15:45

    >> I, love, this, jug.

  392. 15:46

    >> Thank, you, so, much., Here, you, can

  393. 15:48

    >> may, I, put, it, I'm, just, going, to, put, it

  394. 15:50

    over here for continuity.

  395. 15:51

    >> Yeah., So, we, can, make, sure, that, it

  396. 15:54

    doesn't as Lauren say co-star.

  397. 15:56

    >> Okay., I, know., Thank, you., Yes., Let, the

  398. 15:59

audience come to you. When in doubt

  399. 16:01

seduce and keep your jug on the floor.

  400. 16:04

    >> Try, to, get, your, jugs, all, the, way, to, the

  401. 16:06

    floor if you get.

  402. 16:08

    >> Hi,, friend.

  403. 16:09

    >> Hey.

  404. 16:10

    >> Hi.

  405. 16:11

    >> You're, beautiful., Congratulations, on, on

  406. 16:13

    this.

  407. 16:14

    >> Thank, you., I'm, so, happy, that, you're

  408. 16:16

    here.

  409. 16:16

    >> I'm, very, happy, to, be, here.

  410. 16:18

    >> I, know, that, you, do, not, like, to, do

  411. 16:19

interviews. Well, and my first question

  412. 16:21

is just something very very simple

  413. 16:23

    which is

  414. 16:25

    >> what, is, God's, plan, for, us?

  415. 16:28

    >> Um,, God, has, gone

  416. 16:32

    jumped ship.

  417. 16:33

    >> God, is, taking

  418. 16:33

    >> and, gone, to, a, different, universe., God

  419. 16:36

    was like

  420. 16:39

God was like, "Yikes, this that was a

  421. 16:42

miss. And I shall I'll let them do it."

  422. 16:47

Um, yeah, we are doomed. Capital Doomed.

  423. 16:54

Um, no, I know that you don't like love

  424. 16:57

interviews, but I think what is so

  425. 17:00

special about you, Kate, is I feel like

  426. 17:03

you just deepend it pretty fast. Like

  427. 17:05

    you like

  428. 17:07

    deep end complex conversations.

  429. 17:10

    >> Bless, you, for, saying, so., I, I, would, I'd

  430. 17:13

like to What is your sign? Virgo.

  431. 17:16

    >> Got, it., Capricorn.

  432. 17:18

    >> Oh,, of, course., Good., Finally., Finally., A

  433. 17:21

    reasonable person.

  434. 17:22

    >> And, your, MyersBriggs.

  435. 17:24

    >> Um,, ENTJ.

  436. 17:26

    >> Got, it., Good.

  437. 17:27

    >> What's, yours?

  438. 17:28

    >> Good., INFP.

  439. 17:29

    >> Yes., You're, a, definite, I

  440. 17:30

    >> Good.

  441. 17:31

    >> And, also,, uh,, your, enog

  442. 17:33

    >> four, wing, five.

  443. 17:34

    >> Of, course,, you're, a, four.

  444. 17:35

    >> What, are, you?

  445. 17:36

    >> I'm, an, eight.

  446. 17:37

    >> And, that's, the

  447. 17:38

    >> eight, wing, nine., I'm, the, challenger.

  448. 17:40

    >> The, challenger.

  449. 17:41

    >> And, you, are, the, um, romantic,

  450. 17:43

    >> the, [ __ ], sensitivo., I, was, going, to

  451. 17:46

    say I'm the [ __ ]

  452. 17:47

    >> No,, no,, I'm, the, [ __ ]

  453. 17:48

    >> Oh, my, god,, that's, so, funny., I, thought, I

  454. 17:49

    was the [ __ ]

  455. 17:50

    >> Wait,, but, what, is, eight, again?, Which

  456. 17:52

    >> eight, is, the, challenger?, So, eight, is, the

  457. 17:54

    um

  458. 17:55

    >> likes, to, lead.

  459. 17:57

    >> Uh, has, has, problem, with, vulnerabil

  460. 17:59

    problems with vulnerability. So like

  461. 18:01

doesn't go with feelings first, action

  462. 18:03

    first.

  463. 18:04

    >> Four, is, lots, of, feelings.

  464. 18:07

    >> Yeah.

  465. 18:07

    >> Right., So,, if, you're, at, Thanksgiving,

  466. 18:10

the eight is maybe at the table arguing

  467. 18:12

about vaccines or something. The four is

  468. 18:15

in the basement looking through photo

  469. 18:17

    albums of old Thanksgivings.

  470. 18:20

    >> Yes.

  471. 18:20

    >> Would, that, would, that, make, sense?

  472. 18:22

    >> Yes., And, saying, stuff, like

  473. 18:26

    it's all over.

  474. 18:28

    >> Yes.

  475. 18:29

    >> Okay.

  476. 18:30

    >> Awesome., Like, we, are, doomed., Like, God, is

  477. 18:33

gone. And I need you also to know that I

  478. 18:36

my face is covered in poison ivy.

  479. 18:38

    >> Can't, see., Okay., Can't, see, one, one, piece

  480. 18:42

    of evidence for it.

  481. 18:44

    >> See, little, the, little, dots, on, my, neck.

  482. 18:46

    >> Can't, see, at, all., Your, incredible, makeup

  483. 18:47

    artist who we love.

  484. 18:48

    >> Yes., Who, we, love., Cassie, Garcia

  485. 18:51

    >> who, also, I, work, with.

  486. 18:52

    >> Yes.

  487. 18:53

    >> Incredible.

  488. 18:54

    >> She's, always, she, she, relays, messages

  489. 18:56

between the two of us. Same.

  490. 18:58

    >> Yeah.

  491. 18:58

    >> She's, like,, I, saw, Kate., Kate, said, hi.

  492. 19:00

It's really nice. And you could not tell

  493. 19:04

for one minute that you have poison ivy

  494. 19:06

on your face, but I know that you are

  495. 19:10

    like an outdoor cat.

  496. 19:12

    >> Outdoor, cat,, indoor, cat., But, you, are, you

  497. 19:14

    live you're basically you've gone you've

  498. 19:17

    gone to the farm.

  499. 19:18

    >> I've, gone, rogue.

  500. 19:19

    >> You've, gone, rogue.

  501. 19:19

    >> Yes., They, it

  502. 19:21

    >> I, remember, so, clearly., I, believe, we, were

  503. 19:24

in maybe we were at the Kennedy Center

  504. 19:27

Honors in DC or something and I was

  505. 19:30

telling you about my desire to go to the

  506. 19:32

woods and you were like in New York the

  507. 19:35

nature that we have is our pets

  508. 19:38

    >> and, we, need, more, nature, than, that.

  509. 19:41

    >> Yes.

  510. 19:41

    >> And, so, that, I, that, I, always, had, that, in

  511. 19:44

    my head.

  512. 19:45

    >> Mhm.

  513. 19:46

    >> And, I, um, I, did, it.

  514. 19:48

    >> You, did, it., How, does, it, feel?

  515. 19:54

    It's the best.

  516. 19:55

    >> I'm, I, belong, on, the, homestead.

  517. 19:57

    >> Yeah,, I, believe, it.

  518. 19:58

    >> I, belong

  519. 20:01

    on the homestead.

  520. 20:02

    >> I, believe, it.

  521. 20:03

    >> Did, you, feel, that, way, when, you, were

  522. 20:04

younger? Did you feel an affinity to

  523. 20:06

nature? Were you that kind of person

  524. 20:09

like young kid who liked to be in the

  525. 20:11

    woods?

  526. 20:12

    >> I, loved, bugs, and, science, and, making

  527. 20:16

    nature crafts. Mhm.

  528. 20:18

    >> I, remember, making, little, um, bits, of, mud

  529. 20:21

and putting them places. And I remember

  530. 20:23

every time we went to a seafood

  531. 20:25

restaurant, I would say, "Mom, can I

  532. 20:29

take the empty clam muscle and lobster

  533. 20:32

shells home with me and put them in the

  534. 20:34

    bathtub?

  535. 20:36

And after rinsing them of marinara

  536. 20:38

sauce, she would let me um put them in

  537. 20:41

the bathtub. and and I would get in with

  538. 20:43

    them and just

  539. 20:46

    >> um, enjoy, that., And, so,, yes,, I, I, did

  540. 20:49

    always like Did you

  541. 20:51

    >> Well,, I, kind, of, liked, adventure., I, liked

  542. 20:54

the idea of being alone in like I liked

  543. 20:57

getting on my bike and riding through

  544. 21:00

the neighborhood like feeling alone. But

  545. 21:02

talk to me about without, you know

  546. 21:04

    obviously revealing anything too

  547. 21:05

personal, what is your homestead? What

  548. 21:08

do you do on your homestead? Talk to me

  549. 21:10

about what happens there. Are you

  550. 21:12

    farming?

  551. 21:13

    >> I, think, the, reason, I've, I've, done, it, is

  552. 21:16

that I believe very much that we are

  553. 21:20

doomed and I want my goal is is

  554. 21:23

surviving the apocalypse 4 days. Okay

  555. 21:26

that's it. If I can make it to four

  556. 21:30

mama, I will have uh achieved something.

  557. 21:33

A long weekend, like a holiday weekend.

  558. 21:38

    That's such a good That's such a funny

  559. 21:41

thing to think about is what it would

  560. 21:42

take for four days. It's It's more It's

  561. 21:44

more food than you think, obviously.

  562. 21:46

    >> It, is.

  563. 21:47

    >> Yeah.

  564. 21:48

    >> Yeah., And, I, would, I, know, I, wouldn't, make

  565. 21:50

it past 2 hours, but I'd like to think

  566. 21:52

    that I could go 48.

  567. 21:55

    >> Mhm.

  568. 21:56

    >> And, I, would, be, crying, the, whole, time, as

  569. 21:58

a four-wing five. Um, but I would like

  570. 22:03

uh the the the lack of invitations to

  571. 22:07

    social gatherings in the apocalypse.

  572. 22:09

That would be fun. Okay. You are a true

  573. 22:11

    introvert.

  574. 22:14

    >> Which, I, I, am, ashamed, of, because

  575. 22:16

    >> why

  576. 22:16

    >> I, love, people., I, am, fascinated, by, and

  577. 22:20

love to talk to and listen to people.

  578. 22:22

    >> But, the, word, fascinated, is, the, part, you

  579. 22:24

are fascinated by people. People are

  580. 22:27

that's what I think I feel from you is a

  581. 22:30

fascination and a curiosity about the

  582. 22:32

    world and people.

  583. 22:33

    >> That, is, what, is, so, compelling, about

  584. 22:35

being around you is you are very curious

  585. 22:37

    about many things.

  586. 22:39

    >> But, I, sense, that, people, in, general, like

  587. 22:42

a lot of people it's just it's not

  588. 22:45

really your gig. It's just like

  589. 22:47

    one-on-one people feels like

  590. 22:50

    >> or, two, on, oneonone, however, you, like, it.

  591. 22:53

one-on-one, two on one. But you know

  592. 22:55

    >> but, when, we, were, talking, about, you, going

  593. 22:58

like getting back into nature and kind

  594. 23:00

of checking out, I think it was in in

  595. 23:01

the context of New York City being

  596. 23:05

    >> overwhelming., And, you, being, there, for, a

  597. 23:07

long time because you lived in the city

  598. 23:09

    for how many years?

  599. 23:10

    >> 20.

  600. 23:11

    >> And, you, were, on, a, on, SNL, for, how, many

  601. 23:13

    years?

  602. 23:14

    >> 10.

  603. 23:15

    >> And, every, day, you, saw, hundreds, of

  604. 23:17

people. This is the voice that I was

  605. 23:20

just acting up a hair. Excuse me. Uhhuh.

  606. 23:22

    >> If, at, any, point, you, need, a, cold, compress

  607. 23:24

    or

  608. 23:25

    >> um, and, so, you, were, like

  609. 23:29

fascinating that you were in a bustling

  610. 23:31

    city on a bustling show

  611. 23:34

    >> and, it, makes, total, sense, that, you, want

  612. 23:36

to go somewhere and just get a little

  613. 23:37

bit quieter and more peaceful after that

  614. 23:40

    experience right?

  615. 23:41

    >> How, does, an, introverted, person, like, you,

  616. 23:43

how did you manage the huggeeness that

  617. 23:46

was that show? It's such chaos.

  618. 23:51

Do you want me to do an impression of

  619. 23:52

    myself at the afterparty?

  620. 23:54

    >> Yeah.

  621. 23:54

    >> Okay., So,, you, are,, let's, say,, you're, an

  622. 23:57

    agent that I know.

  623. 23:58

    >> Great.

  624. 23:59

    >> Okay.

  625. 24:00

    >> Okay., And, I'll, and, I'll, just, be, talking

  626. 24:01

    to you. Okay.

  627. 24:02

    >> Really, close,, really, quiet.

  628. 24:06

    >> Tell, me, about, your, parents, that,, you

  629. 24:09

    know, that kind of thing.

  630. 24:10

    >> Yeah., You, wanted, But, that's, what, I'm

  631. 24:11

talking about. You like a one-on-one

  632. 24:13

    connection.

  633. 24:15

You like people. You want connection.

  634. 24:18

    >> I, really, do.

  635. 24:19

    >> Yeah., When, I, watch, you, on, SNL,, you're, so

  636. 24:23

connected to what you're doing. You're

  637. 24:24

    very

  638. 24:26

relaxing to watch because you don't seem

  639. 24:29

    nervous.

  640. 24:33

    >> But, was, that, all, am, I, getting, it, totally

  641. 24:36

wrong? Like was inside uh whirly whirly

  642. 24:40

swirly or was the inside kind of

  643. 24:42

peaceful when you were you in the zone

  644. 24:44

    when you would perform?

  645. 24:46

    >> Oh, gosh., Um,

  646. 24:48

    always terribly nervous

  647. 24:51

    >> horrifically, nervous,

  648. 24:52

    >> less, so, at, dress,, I, always, felt, I, did, I

  649. 24:55

did my best at dress and then air was

  650. 24:58

    just less good

  651. 24:59

    >> cuz, I, was, thinking, about

  652. 25:02

    >> um, the, cameras., But, when, it, was, just

  653. 25:04

    dress and just

  654. 25:07

I could really sometimes if I was really

  655. 25:10

    in it feel like

  656. 25:13

I was in dialogue with the people in the

  657. 25:16

audience and like we were sharing

  658. 25:17

something, you know? I I feel like

  659. 25:19

sketch is like you see something that

  660. 25:22

you love that delights you and you're

  661. 25:24

like just showing it to people and then

  662. 25:27

you're like, "Do you guys like it too?

  663. 25:31

Cuz I think this is funny." And if they

  664. 25:33

do, then then you're like you have a

  665. 25:35

connection. And I I felt sometimes like

  666. 25:38

I was just with friends. I mean, Lauren

  667. 25:41

    said that I'm sure

  668. 25:42

    >> it, should, feel, like, you're, in, your

  669. 25:44

    living room playing.

  670. 25:46

    >> Ooh,, that's, good.

  671. 25:47

    >> And, I, I, did, got, get, to, that, point.

  672. 25:50

    >> You, definitely, did., I, mean,, first, of

  673. 25:53

all, we got to see I mean, this might

  674. 25:56

make you uncomfortable this kind of

  675. 25:57

praise, but I feel like there's Here she

  676. 25:59

    goes.

  677. 26:01

Okay, hold on. Hang on. Praise is

  678. 26:03

    coming. Okay, praise is coming.

  679. 26:07

There are people on that show that I

  680. 26:10

felt were naturals on that show. Now

  681. 26:12

whether or not they felt natural is is

  682. 26:15

their own personal story. But you, Maya

  683. 26:19

Rudolph, this is my opinion. you, Maya

  684. 26:21

    Rudolph,

  685. 26:23

Dana Carvey, Will Ferrell, people who

  686. 26:26

just kind of came onto the show, fit

  687. 26:29

    right in and just became

  688. 26:32

just like instant captains, just instant

  689. 26:36

    um

  690. 26:38

crushers, just so good at that show

  691. 26:41

because that show needs a specific kind

  692. 26:43

    of something. I don't know. I don't even

  693. 26:44

    know, you know. And

  694. 26:47

I always felt that from you, just this

  695. 26:52

    calm confidence when you were

  696. 26:54

performing. And it's interesting to know

  697. 26:57

that inside you were not feeling that

  698. 26:59

way. What what did you do when you were

  699. 27:03

not feeling like you did well? What like

  700. 27:07

like how do you how did you manage that

  701. 27:09

feeling? I mean, I can't think of any

  702. 27:11

time you didn't do well, but it's so

  703. 27:13

funny. I'm sure you felt that. There

  704. 27:14

    were plenty of um

  705. 27:17

    desperate failures

  706. 27:19

that haunt me even now. I um no I uh no

  707. 27:25

a lot of failures and they they still

  708. 27:28

sometimes I'll think of something that

  709. 27:30

    didn't work or that I didn't I just

  710. 27:32

couldn't get there in time with the

  711. 27:34

writing or the performing and it it

  712. 27:35

    still stings

  713. 27:37

    >> and, I, still, feel, shame, and, that, you, know

  714. 27:38

and that's on me. Um, but I um I also

  715. 27:42

have made the terrible mistake of

  716. 27:44

    reading

  717. 27:45

    >> oh

  718. 27:46

    >> stuff, on, the, internet, which

  719. 27:48

    >> I, truly, wish, I, could, go, back, and, have

  720. 27:51

never looked at the internet because it

  721. 27:52

    has

  722. 27:53

    >> y

  723. 27:54

    >> um, that, haunts, me, as, well

  724. 27:56

    >> and, also, you, just, cannot, remember, the

  725. 27:59

    good things.

  726. 28:00

    >> You, can't, remember, no

  727. 28:02

    >> for, the, hundred, good, things., It's, just

  728. 28:03

like can't can't conjure them up but the

  729. 28:06

one bad one you'll never forget. Yeah

  730. 28:08

there are phrases that I have read that

  731. 28:14

    >> not, even, that, mean, not, unfounded, like

  732. 28:17

things with a kernel of truth like

  733. 28:20

    thoughtful critiques

  734. 28:23

    that I agreed with.

  735. 28:24

    >> Mhm.

  736. 28:25

    >> That, uh, have, ruined, my, life., That, will

  737. 28:28

be that will be on your head.

  738. 28:34

    >> Okay., But, but, so, but, when, you, were, per

  739. 28:37

like did you have any okay talk like

  740. 28:39

were you did you like to rehearse all

  741. 28:41

the time? Were you in your room rehears

  742. 28:43

were you the kind of performer go you're

  743. 28:46

in your room before you're doing your

  744. 28:47

sketch quiet and in intensely working on

  745. 28:51

it? Did you like to play around and stay

  746. 28:54

    loose before a scene? Cuz I didn't

  747. 28:56

really ever get a chance to work with

  748. 28:57

you very much. We only did a few small

  749. 28:59

things together. Did you like to be

  750. 29:00

alone and get ready for stuff or did you

  751. 29:03

like to stay loose and you know what I

  752. 29:06

    mean?

  753. 29:06

    >> Yeah., No,, I, I, I, I, think, I, I, mostly, like

  754. 29:10

    to wing it.

  755. 29:12

    >> Um, I, there, were, like, a, I, don't, know, if

  756. 29:16

you uh can relate if it was like a just

  757. 29:20

a twoperson scene that was like really a

  758. 29:22

scene that required like your eyes are

  759. 29:24

    so beautiful. I'm

  760. 29:26

    >> mine.

  761. 29:27

    >> Yes., Oh, my, god,, Kate.

  762. 29:30

    >> You, know, what?

  763. 29:32

You shine like a sun and I'm having

  764. 29:34

trouble concentrating on what I was

  765. 29:36

    saying.

  766. 29:37

    >> I, um

  767. 29:40

    love you.

  768. 29:41

    >> You, too,, my, queen., My, queen., Um, I, if, it

  769. 29:45

was like a two person scene with a lot

  770. 29:46

of lines, I would try to not memorize

  771. 29:50

but become very intimately familiar with

  772. 29:52

the lines. I could feel that that you

  773. 29:54

liked to know your lines, which some

  774. 29:56

people don't really try to do cuz people

  775. 29:58

don't know, but it changes a lot at SNL

  776. 30:00

so sometimes you're a little screwed if

  777. 30:01

you know your lines too well.

  778. 30:02

    >> Right., Right., Um,, so, if, it, was, like, not

  779. 30:05

changing that much and it was like a

  780. 30:08

    like more acting

  781. 30:09

    >> Yeah.

  782. 30:10

    >> scene,, I, would, sort, of, like, to, like, run

  783. 30:13

through it a few times, but otherwise I

  784. 30:14

I liked to uh wing it. Um

  785. 30:19

that's what I mean is you have you had a

  786. 30:22

    very

  787. 30:24

groovy flow in a lot of the stuff that

  788. 30:26

you did. And so who knew babe that

  789. 30:30

inside was you know a bunch of mice

  790. 30:34

carrying ladders and stuff like like who

  791. 30:37

knew? And so when we talked about you

  792. 30:42

like hitting the road and getting

  793. 30:44

homesteading basically what I feel like

  794. 30:47

was underneath that was like here's the

  795. 30:49

new next chapter of chapter of the

  796. 30:51

version of my life like you know if if

  797. 30:53

my life is a book I'm interested in what

  798. 30:56

    the next chapter is.

  799. 30:57

    >> Yes.

  800. 30:57

    >> What, is, the, what, would, you, like, what

  801. 30:59

would you title this chapter of your

  802. 31:01

    life postsl

  803. 31:04

    >> growing, growing, your, own, food, prepping

  804. 31:06

for the apocalypse? My goodness. Um

  805. 31:09

    >> what, would, it, what, would, you, say?, What

  806. 31:11

    era are you in?

  807. 31:13

    >> Getting, real.

  808. 31:15

    >> Getting, real, or, um, 41

  809. 31:19

    or um

  810. 31:20

    >> getting, getting, with, an, apostrophe

  811. 31:22

    getting real.

  812. 31:25

    >> Um,, well,

  813. 31:28

let's be honest. I feel like

  814. 31:31

I had one dream. One dream. It was SNL.

  815. 31:36

Did it done loved it. Awesome. Um, not

  816. 31:42

    quite sure.

  817. 31:44

    >> Not, quite, sure, what, to, really, be, like

  818. 31:49

    single-minded

  819. 31:51

about. I I love filming movies and uh

  820. 31:56

the the small amount of episodic

  821. 31:58

    television.

  822. 31:59

    >> What, do, you, love, about, making, movies?

  823. 32:01

    I love

  824. 32:05

    being able to

  825. 32:07

    I love going somewhere

  826. 32:10

    >> for, a, month, or, two

  827. 32:12

    >> and, walking, around.

  828. 32:14

    >> Yeah.

  829. 32:15

    >> And, falling, in, love, with, 80, new, people

  830. 32:18

    and um

  831. 32:20

    >> the, the, the, circus, the, camp, of, it.

  832. 32:23

    >> Yeah.

  833. 32:23

    >> The, summer, camp., You, went, to, you, went, to

  834. 32:26

    camp?

  835. 32:26

    >> I, never, did.

  836. 32:27

    >> Oh, my, gosh.

  837. 32:28

    >> I, know., I, went, to, a, day, camp,, but, I

  838. 32:30

never went away. I would have loved to

  839. 32:31

have gone like away from home, but yeah

  840. 32:34

just this idea that you had this stolen

  841. 32:36

    time almost in another place.

  842. 32:38

    >> You, can, be, anything.

  843. 32:40

    >> And, um, I, love, that., And, I, also, love, um, I

  844. 32:45

love I just love movies. I think they're

  845. 32:47

wonderful as a as a medium.

  846. 32:50

    >> And, I, love, um, doing, a, scene, uh, as

  847. 32:55

scripted and then trying it 80 different

  848. 32:57

ways. and they pick the best one and as

  849. 33:00

opposed to like you've got one shot, one

  850. 33:03

opportunity to seize everything you ever

  851. 33:06

wanted. Are you will you capture it or

  852. 33:08

    will you let it slip?

  853. 33:09

    >> Um, do, not, miss, your, chance, cuz

  854. 33:12

    opportunity comes

  855. 33:15

    >> once, in, a, lifetime.

  856. 33:17

    >> Um

  857. 33:18

but that was what SNL was.

  858. 33:20

    >> Yes.

  859. 33:21

    >> So, you, did, it, so, well., So, you, feel, like

  860. 33:24

    you

  861. 33:25

    Yeah, I hear what you're saying. It's

  862. 33:26

like, okay, I did that. I did that as to

  863. 33:29

the best of my ability and now I want

  864. 33:31

to, you know, practice my backhand

  865. 33:34

basically or or or or not even my

  866. 33:36

backhand, just try try a new shot.

  867. 33:38

    >> Yeah., Yeah., Totally., Like, I, loved, doing

  868. 33:40

pre-taped pieces because for that very

  869. 33:42

reason. And I I have loved truly loved

  870. 33:45

every experience I've had working on a

  871. 33:48

    film.

  872. 33:49

    >> So, I'd, love, to, do, more, of, that., And, I

  873. 33:53

    >> um, but, I, I, but, there's, only, so, many, um

  874. 33:58

    hours in a year that

  875. 34:00

    >> Yeah.

  876. 34:01

    >> Uh, you, know,, SNL, took, up, so, much

  877. 34:04

    >> Yeah.

  878. 34:05

    >> of, all, of, our

  879. 34:08

lives and and when it's over, it just

  880. 34:11

    leaves a a time hole.

  881. 34:14

    >> And, so, I, had, to, fill, my, time, hole.

  882. 34:18

    >> And

  883. 34:18

    >> that's, the, name, of, your, workshop.

  884. 34:20

fill your time home with Kate McKinnon.

  885. 34:24

    >> Um,, and, so, I've, done, that., I've, I've

  886. 34:26

tried to be uh useful in growing food

  887. 34:30

and I've also taken up carpentry as

  888. 34:32

    well.

  889. 34:32

    >> Okay., I've, heard, about, this., Talk, can

  890. 34:35

you talk to me about the materials

  891. 34:36

you're using because I know a little bit

  892. 34:38

    about woodworking from Nick

  893. 34:39

    >> Offer, from, Nick.

  894. 34:40

    >> Have, you, spoken, to, Nick?

  895. 34:42

    >> I've, never, No,, I, like, I, mean, I've, meant

  896. 34:45

to. He has an amazing work workshop and

  897. 34:49

he's he's such a good teacher and and um

  898. 34:52

    share of knowledge

  899. 34:54

    >> and, tell, me, what, you, like, about

  900. 34:57

woodworking and carpentry. What do you

  901. 34:58

    what's your favorite part?

  902. 35:01

It is well I think it's in my jeans

  903. 35:05

because my grandfather was a woodworker

  904. 35:08

    >> my, father, was, an, architect, and, um, I, just

  905. 35:14

I love the practicality of being you can

  906. 35:18

you know manipulate this material and

  907. 35:20

then you can spend time in it.

  908. 35:23

    >> Yeah.

  909. 35:24

    >> How, crazy, is, that?

  910. 35:26

    >> You, can, sit, on, it.

  911. 35:28

    >> I, love, to, sit, on, things, I, do., Um, it's

  912. 35:31

just so much it's you know a sketch a a

  913. 35:35

a book of something it's so ephemerrable

  914. 35:38

ephemerrable and and to say I will sleep

  915. 35:43

    on what I did today.

  916. 35:44

    >> Yes.

  917. 35:45

    >> Is, like

  918. 35:47

    that's like life you know

  919. 35:49

    >> that's, cool.

  920. 35:51

    >> What, materials, do, you, like, to, work, with?

  921. 35:53

What kind of wood? I've been doing

  922. 35:55

mostly uh trim carpentry which which is

  923. 35:58

uh moldings and paneling and I've been

  924. 36:01

uh using reclaimed hemlock for that

  925. 36:03

    mostly.

  926. 36:04

    >> You've, been, making, your, own, moldings.

  927. 36:06

    >> Yes., And, I, thought, I, thought, I, was, the

  928. 36:09

    only one.

  929. 36:11

Then I'm backstage at uh that SNL50

  930. 36:14

concert. I'm talking to Brandy Carile.

  931. 36:17

    She's doing trim carpet.

  932. 36:20

I'm like, Bran, of course you are. She's

  933. 36:24

like, John Stewart's doing his tr I'm

  934. 36:26

    like,

  935. 36:29

    >> turned, out, it's, trit, what, I'm, doing.

  936. 36:31

    Everyone's doing trim carpet. You're

  937. 36:33

    doing trim carpentry. I know.

  938. 36:35

    >> I, mean,, people, think, I'm, doing, trim

  939. 36:37

    carpentry, but I'm not.

  940. 36:39

    >> So,, when, you, when, you're, making, stuff

  941. 36:41

like something like when you're when

  942. 36:43

you're wood when you're working with

  943. 36:44

    wood

  944. 36:45

    >> Mhm.

  945. 36:45

    >> what, happens, when, you, make, a, mistake?, I

  946. 36:48

    feel because I I'm asking I'm very

  947. 36:50

intimidated by working with wood. I feel

  948. 36:52

like I if you make a if you measure

  949. 36:54

    wrong you're [ __ ] like you can't

  950. 36:56

    >> what, do, you, just, kind, of

  951. 36:59

    >> I, put, it, up, inside, the, home, anyway, and, I

  952. 37:02

    have absolutely decreased the property

  953. 37:04

value of the house with my

  954. 37:08

shoddy work. Yes, I know that I have.

  955. 37:11

    >> It, is, not, Brandy, Carlile, level.

  956. 37:13

    >> No,, nothing, is, true., That's, true.

  957. 37:17

What do you want to make? What's the

  958. 37:19

dream thing you want to eventually make?

  959. 37:20

Do you want to move on from molding and

  960. 37:22

moldings and and do you want to make

  961. 37:25

    furniture?

  962. 37:26

    >> I, do., You, make, furniture?

  963. 37:28

    >> I, I, have, I, made, a, table.

  964. 37:30

    >> Dang,

  965. 37:30

    >> that, was, cool.

  966. 37:32

    >> But, honestly,, I, would, like, to, move, into

  967. 37:35

plumbing and electrical. I would like to

  968. 37:38

    be

  969. 37:39

    >> um, have, all, the, skills, of, a, general

  970. 37:41

    contractor.

  971. 37:42

    >> I, love, that., I, love, that., I, don't, know.

  972. 37:46

    >> Well,, because, the, end, is, near, and, you

  973. 37:48

know, we have to Well, someone's got to

  974. 37:50

    wire the shelter.

  975. 37:51

    >> Yeah,, exactly., If, we're, going, to, get, one

  976. 37:53

more day in that shelter, we're going to

  977. 37:54

need how the We're going to need to fix

  978. 37:56

    the toilet.

  979. 37:56

    >> Yeah.

  980. 37:58

    >> Yeah.

  981. 37:59

    I I so relate though, Kate. I I mean, I

  982. 38:04

have no doubt you will. I have no doubt

  983. 38:05

you'll learn about plumbing. And And

  984. 38:07

    >> I, mean,, that's, a, ways, away.

  985. 38:09

    >> You, think, so?

  986. 38:10

    >> Well,, it's, someone's, job, for, a, reason.

  987. 38:14

    Yeah,

  988. 38:15

    >> that's, a, two-year, certificate, at, at

  989. 38:18

    minimum.

  990. 38:18

    >> Yeah.

  991. 38:19

    >> Um,, so, but, yes,, I, would, like, to, acquire

  992. 38:22

all of those the skills that can make a

  993. 38:26

    home function.

  994. 38:27

    >> Mhm.

  995. 38:28

    >> For, 4, days.

  996. 38:36

What I like about this conversation is

  997. 38:38

that I feel like we're going out in the

  998. 38:40

woods and then we're coming back into

  999. 38:43

    the city.

  1000. 38:44

    >> Yeah.

  1001. 38:44

    >> Back, and, forth., So, coming, back, into, the

  1002. 38:46

    city if I can.

  1003. 38:48

    >> Yes.

  1004. 38:50

Can you speak about the last show of of

  1005. 38:54

    you of yours at SNL

  1006. 38:56

    >> because, I, remember, that, being, feeling

  1007. 38:58

very powerful and very moving and I

  1008. 39:00

think we spoke about it and it was for

  1009. 39:02

you. It was a very beautiful sendoff

  1010. 39:05

where you walk up into the stairs as

  1011. 39:08

    Miss Rafferty

  1012. 39:09

    >> meeting, the, aliens, finally, maybe, we

  1013. 39:11

    don't know

  1014. 39:12

    >> or, finally, meeting, you, know, or, them

  1015. 39:15

    taking you away or you

  1016. 39:17

    >> willingly, going., We, don't, know., Yeah.

  1017. 39:18

    >> What, do, you, think, happens, to, her, and

  1018. 39:21

you? But that walk up the stairs and

  1019. 39:23

like the wave goodbye was really

  1020. 39:25

beautiful and really cool. What was the

  1021. 39:28

last what was your last show like?

  1022. 39:31

    >> I, thought, it, was, really, beautiful, too.

  1023. 39:33

It was not my pitch. That was streeter

  1024. 39:35

    and Mikey Day

  1025. 39:37

    >> um, came, up, with, that., My, pitch, was, that

  1026. 39:40

I did this character Sheila Sovage. Yes.

  1027. 39:42

    >> Uh, the, barfly., Um,, and, my, pitch, was, that

  1028. 39:46

I would tongue every single person in

  1029. 39:50

    the cast

  1030. 39:53

um, in a line and you know, I thought

  1031. 39:55

ultimately that the alien thing was a

  1032. 39:57

    little more meaningful

  1033. 39:59

and had a better tone. So, we went with

  1034. 40:02

    that. Um

  1035. 40:04

    >> so, everyone, narrowly, missed, uh,, sucking

  1036. 40:08

    my face.

  1037. 40:09

    >> That, goodbye, that, goodbyes, that, goodbye

  1038. 40:11

tonging. But that was very emotional

  1039. 40:14

    because

  1040. 40:16

uh it was every I mean

  1041. 40:20

    >> you, did, over, 200, shows, or, something.

  1042. 40:22

    >> Everything, to, me, and, those, people, are

  1043. 40:24

    everything to me.

  1044. 40:26

    >> Jenna.

  1045. 40:27

    >> Yeah.

  1046. 40:28

    >> You, know,, um, Chris, Kelly,, everybody., And

  1047. 40:31

and and Lauren, who has been, you know

  1048. 40:35

a a surrogate father uh to me. And I I

  1049. 40:40

could cry now thinking about what he has

  1050. 40:43

been to me in my life as I'm sure we all

  1051. 40:45

    could. And

  1052. 40:46

    >> what, what, can, you, speak, a, little, bit

  1053. 40:47

more? What has he been what has he done

  1054. 40:48

to like what was your relationship with

  1055. 40:50

    him like?

  1056. 40:52

    >> My, well, very, my, my, father, passed, when, I

  1057. 40:55

was 18. I loved my father

  1058. 40:59

beyond and he um Lauren just was nothing

  1059. 41:05

but paternal. And when you uh have

  1060. 41:08

somehow by by the grace of whatever

  1061. 41:11

earned the esteem of a man like that, a

  1062. 41:13

    man who's that like

  1063. 41:16

larger than life, it just it means

  1064. 41:19

everything. And so um I was like

  1065. 41:24

    just sad.

  1066. 41:25

    >> Yeah.

  1067. 41:26

    >> To, go., I, had, I, had, to, I, I, I, had, reached

  1068. 41:29

a point where I was like yawning during

  1069. 41:32

the show and that just did not that was

  1070. 41:34

not working for me physically anymore.

  1071. 41:37

    >> Yeah.

  1072. 41:37

    >> And

  1073. 41:39

    there there you have it.

  1074. 41:41

    >> So,

  1075. 41:41

    >> but, it, didn't, mean, I, wanted, to, get, away

  1076. 41:43

    from those folks.

  1077. 41:44

    >> You, love, those, folks., You, love, those

  1078. 41:46

folks. Boy, Kate, they love you.

  1079. 41:49

    >> You, know, who, loves, you, so, much?, And

  1080. 41:50

there's a million people who do. Seth

  1081. 41:52

    Meyers.

  1082. 41:54

    >> He, loves, you.

  1083. 41:56

He you are he just is like and again

  1084. 42:01

praise coming in prepare. But you were

  1085. 42:04

just such a natural captain when you

  1086. 42:06

were in there on that show. You just you

  1087. 42:09

led that show through a lot of years and

  1088. 42:12

you were in a lot of sketches and you

  1089. 42:14

were doing a lot. You were you were

  1090. 42:17

carrying a lot on your shoulders in that

  1091. 42:19

show whether or not you felt it or not.

  1092. 42:22

And you were you were being asked to do

  1093. 42:26

    really big

  1094. 42:28

    playing like really for quoteunquote

  1095. 42:30

like important people at important times

  1096. 42:33

whether it's Hillary Clinton or Rudy

  1097. 42:36

Giuliani or like you were playing all

  1098. 42:38

the it was the the world you the world

  1099. 42:41

is nuts and it's weird and I know from

  1100. 42:43

    experience because we both played

  1101. 42:45

political figures to play people in real

  1102. 42:48

time that are also existing in real time

  1103. 42:50

in the world and there's real world

  1104. 42:51

    consequence And it's very strange.

  1105. 42:54

    >> Yes., Yes,, it, is.

  1106. 42:58

    Yeah, it certainly did.

  1107. 43:00

    >> What, was, it?, What, would, how, did, it, feel?

  1108. 43:02

Was there Did you feel any

  1109. 43:03

    responsibility when you were playing

  1110. 43:05

anybody? Uh or did you have to kind of

  1111. 43:07

let that go and not worry about it?

  1112. 43:10

    >> No,, mama., I, felt, a, lot, of, I, felt, a, lot.

  1113. 43:13

    >> Yeah.

  1114. 43:14

    >> I'm, sorry., Just, to, talk, about, Seth, for

  1115. 43:16

one second. Let's go back to Seth. When

  1116. 43:18

    Seth left

  1117. 43:20

    >> it, was, in, a, February., That, was, another

  1118. 43:22

that I felt like I only overlapped with

  1119. 43:26

    him for

  1120. 43:27

two or 3 years or so, but he and he is

  1121. 43:31

not very much older than me, but I felt

  1122. 43:34

like he was like had a paternal, you

  1123. 43:38

know, thing. And like when he left, oh

  1124. 43:40

my god, I was so crushed.

  1125. 43:44

And I forget that life goes on and you

  1126. 43:46

like you form, you know, other

  1127. 43:50

connections and stuff, but that was

  1128. 43:52

like, oh, I love that guy.

  1129. 43:54

    >> Yeah,

  1130. 43:55

    >> I, love, that, guy.

  1131. 43:56

    >> Yo,, any, horse., Um,, what, were, we, saying

  1132. 44:00

    about

  1133. 44:01

    >> politics?, Who, cares?, You, know, what?

  1134. 44:03

    >> Politics., Well,, it's, a, double-edged

  1135. 44:05

sword, I felt, and you let me know how

  1136. 44:08

    this lands for you.

  1137. 44:09

    >> Yeah., But, I, felt, it, was, a, double-edged

  1138. 44:12

    sword in that

  1139. 44:14

I felt like I was really doing something

  1140. 44:16

    with my life, something meaningful

  1141. 44:19

    >> being, engaged, in, the, most, peripheral

  1142. 44:22

    possible way in

  1143. 44:26

    in culture in

  1144. 44:28

    in history.

  1145. 44:30

    >> Yeah.

  1146. 44:30

    >> In, the, mo, like, Yeah., just, on, the

  1147. 44:33

sidelines putting on a wig, you know

  1148. 44:36

doing little songs about whatever was

  1149. 44:39

    actually going on, but like

  1150. 44:41

    >> um, being, in, the, smallest, way, a, part, of

  1151. 44:44

    that felt like I was

  1152. 44:48

    doing something meaningful. And with

  1153. 44:51

    that came

  1154. 44:55

you know, like I remember there was one

  1155. 44:57

    article

  1156. 44:58

    >> that, was, like,, "Will, she, hurt, Hillary

  1157. 45:01

    Clinton?"

  1158. 45:01

    >> Oh, god.

  1159. 45:02

    >> And, I, was, like,, "God,, y'all,, y'all

  1160. 45:07

shouldn't read, should not have read

  1161. 45:09

should never have looked, but that like

  1162. 45:12

    that notion

  1163. 45:14

uh just broke my brain." And like I

  1164. 45:18

obviously no one I think doing an a

  1165. 45:22

satire has the power to actually

  1166. 45:24

influence but um I did not want to hurt

  1167. 45:28

anybody even people I uh vehemently

  1168. 45:32

disagreed with politically like I still

  1169. 45:33

didn't want to ever hurt anyone's

  1170. 45:35

    feelings.

  1171. 45:36

    >> Um, and, so, yeah, there, was, some, balancing

  1172. 45:41

    to do there.

  1173. 45:42

    >> Did, you, ever, meet, anybody, while, you, were

  1174. 45:44

dressed as them? Yes. I met um

  1175. 45:50

    >> Secretary, Clinton,

  1176. 45:52

    >> uh, Senator, Warren., That, was

  1177. 45:57

    >> Oh,, awesome.

  1178. 46:01

    >> Oh, my, gosh.

  1179. 46:02

    >> Oh,, you, guys, did, a, really, fun, You, guys

  1180. 46:05

did like a switch a Tik Tok switcheroo.

  1181. 46:07

    >> Yeah.

  1182. 46:08

    >> Yeah., She, was, like, the, after, there, was

  1183. 46:11

some vote on the floor of Congress.

  1184. 46:15

I believe it was on January 6th about I

  1185. 46:18

forget what it was and all the Democrats

  1186. 46:20

were saying no and all the Republicans

  1187. 46:21

were saying yes. I forget what about but

  1188. 46:24

they were going down the list calling

  1189. 46:26

the names of all the Democratic senators

  1190. 46:27

and everyone was saying no, no, no. And

  1191. 46:30

then it got to her and she was like no.

  1192. 46:32

    [Laughter]

  1193. 46:38

And then I know it's a question you get

  1194. 46:40

asked all the time, but I do love this

  1195. 46:41

    question which is well two.

  1196. 46:44

Did you watch did you ever go on the

  1197. 46:46

server and watch sketches that bombed?

  1198. 46:48

We used to we used to watch our sketch.

  1199. 46:49

Do you like do you kind of like it when

  1200. 46:51

sketches bomb a little bit? Like did you

  1201. 46:53

    ever enjoy that?

  1202. 46:54

    >> And, did, you, ever, rewatch, a, sketch, that

  1203. 46:56

like didn't make it? We used to go and

  1204. 46:59

watch our sketches from dress that

  1205. 47:01

    bombed and just like

  1206. 47:03

    >> it, was, and, just, watch, it, together, like

  1207. 47:04

you know kind of like process it

  1208. 47:06

together and it was just like such a

  1209. 47:08

nice feeling basically just a reminder

  1210. 47:10

    that everybody bombs basically.

  1211. 47:13

    >> Um, did, you, ever, do, that?

  1212. 47:15

    >> Um, yes, there, were, a, few

  1213. 47:19

a few hits that we would watch over and

  1214. 47:22

    over again.

  1215. 47:24

Um there was one there was one rehearsal

  1216. 47:28

where um a person I won't say who

  1217. 47:33

simply stopped doing the sketch and sat

  1218. 47:35

    down on the stage.

  1219. 47:36

    >> Sure., Um, that, was, a, fun, watch, and, yeah

  1220. 47:40

    just stuff like that.

  1221. 47:41

    >> We, we, had, a, we, had, a, host, again, I, won't

  1222. 47:43

say who who like halfway through just um

  1223. 47:46

    >> kind, of, fell, asleep, a, little, bit.

  1224. 47:50

    >> Yeah., And, it, was, like, this, was, dressed.

  1225. 47:51

    I was like, "Okay, well, I guess we're I

  1226. 47:53

guess this character is asleep now."

  1227. 47:56

    >> Don't, blame, him.

  1228. 47:57

    >> Agree.

  1229. 47:58

    >> Time, to, sit, down.

  1230. 47:59

    >> And, it's, it's, a, tough, gig.

  1231. 48:02

    >> Did, you, find, that, hosting, was, so, much

  1232. 48:06

harder than you could have ever

  1233. 48:08

    imagined?

  1234. 48:08

    >> I, wanted, to, be, back, with, the, like, I

  1235. 48:11

didn't want to be in I Yeah, I know. I

  1236. 48:13

    wanted to be like

  1237. 48:15

    >> I, kept, being, like,, "What, are, you, guys

  1238. 48:16

doing over there?" Like I kept wanting

  1239. 48:17

    to be over there.

  1240. 48:19

    >> Yeah., Um,

  1241. 48:21

    >> yeah., Yeah., And, and

  1242. 48:24

who did you love? Host who what host did

  1243. 48:26

    you love? Like

  1244. 48:27

    >> that, you, just, think, about, you're, just

  1245. 48:28

like, "Oh my god, that's so like

  1246. 48:31

    >> I, remember, really, loving, uh, Amy, Adams."

  1247. 48:34

    >> Yes.

  1248. 48:35

    >> Emily, Blunt.

  1249. 48:36

    >> Yes.

  1250. 48:37

    >> Um

  1251. 48:39

I a lot those are the two that pop into

  1252. 48:41

my mind. But just I loved I loved

  1253. 48:46

    actresses

  1254. 48:48

    who were

  1255. 48:49

    wonderful comedic actresses and also

  1256. 48:52

    actresses.

  1257. 48:52

    >> Oh,, that's, so, interesting., What, type, was

  1258. 48:55

    your

  1259. 48:56

    >> I, enjoyed, weirdly, often, athletes

  1260. 49:00

    >> because, they, wanted, to, be, coached, and

  1261. 49:04

they would be like, "How do you want me

  1262. 49:05

to, say, it?, How, do, you, want, me, to, do it?"

  1263. 49:06

And I'd be like "Oh, thank God.

  1264. 49:08

    >> This, is, exactly, how, I, want, you, to, do

  1265. 49:10

it." you know, and they felt really good

  1266. 49:12

about that. Like there was no and they

  1267. 49:14

would if they scored, they were like

  1268. 49:15

"Yay!" And if they did, they were like

  1269. 49:16

"This isn't my gig." Like they just they

  1270. 49:18

didn't they didn't feel and it relaxed

  1271. 49:20

me. It relaxed me when athletes would

  1272. 49:22

    host.

  1273. 49:23

    >> Um

  1274. 49:24

    >> or, or, people, like, that., People, who, were

  1275. 49:26

just like, "This is a this is so weird

  1276. 49:28

    that I'm here."

  1277. 49:29

    >> Did, Charles, Barkley, ever, host, when, you

  1278. 49:31

    >> No., Did, you, love, him?

  1279. 49:32

    >> Oh, my, god.

  1280. 49:33

    >> You, loved, him.

  1281. 49:34

    >> Now, there's, a, funny, athlete., Jesus

  1282. 49:36

Christ. He may be the funniest man

  1283. 49:38

    alive.

  1284. 49:40

And I did do one of my bar fly sketches

  1285. 49:44

with him. So I have his tongue has been

  1286. 49:48

    in my mouth and I

  1287. 49:52

    >> It, was, nice.

  1288. 49:53

    >> Fantastic., Um,, okay., So, we, do, this, thing

  1289. 49:55

on the show where we talk to people

  1290. 49:56

before, our, interview., I, don't, know if

  1291. 49:58

    you know this.

  1292. 50:00

    >> We, talk, well, behind, their, back., We, talk

  1293. 50:01

to somebody who knows them and they give

  1294. 50:04

me they give me a question to ask them.

  1295. 50:06

So, we talked to Adie Bryant today, the

  1296. 50:09

great 80. Oh. Oh, here we go. Tears.

  1297. 50:11

Waterworks. 80 and you like tell me a

  1298. 50:15

    little bit about what 80

  1299. 50:18

    [Music]

  1300. 50:19

what it meant to have 80 there when you

  1301. 50:21

were there and like working with her.

  1302. 50:22

What was what was your relationship

  1303. 50:24

    like?

  1304. 50:24

    >> I, mean,, she, taught, me, about, like, so, much

  1305. 50:27

about comedy, but she also taught me

  1306. 50:29

about just like being a person. comedy

  1307. 50:32

aside. I mean, she's a genius, but like

  1308. 50:34

just one of the most solid people I've

  1309. 50:36

    ever

  1310. 50:38

    known. And I

  1311. 50:42

she just she like when I moved into my

  1312. 50:45

apartment, she was like, "Invest in your

  1313. 50:47

    base."

  1314. 50:49

which she was basically telling me to

  1315. 50:51

like get kind of okay furniture which

  1316. 50:53

like I wasn't planning on doing

  1317. 50:56

    but she just she um

  1318. 51:00

    >> I, think, in, many, ways, she, taught, me, how

  1319. 51:01

    to live

  1320. 51:02

    >> and, uh, how, to, be, okay, even, in, silence, I

  1321. 51:06

was like okay this is my sister everyone

  1322. 51:09

here is my friend this is my sister

  1323. 51:13

    >> I, uh, we, were, re-watching, the, sketch

  1324. 51:16

today um of you and AD as the as uh I

  1325. 51:22

think it was Henrietta and Nan the

  1326. 51:25

PowerPoint ladies who couldn't get the

  1327. 51:27

    PowerPoint to work.

  1328. 51:29

    >> It, was, I, was, reminded, 15, more, of, those

  1329. 51:33

    right now.

  1330. 51:33

    >> I, was, reminded, of, that, the, other, day, and

  1331. 51:37

I was asking the gal who wrote it, did

  1332. 51:40

you come up with the phrase digifiles

  1333. 51:43

and she said no that was 80 dig files? I

  1334. 51:48

    like when 80 says when 80 says I don't

  1335. 51:50

think I can learn anything anymore.

  1336. 51:54

    >> I, don't, think, I, can, learn, anything, new

  1337. 51:55

    anymore.

  1338. 51:56

    >> Oh, my, god,

  1339. 51:58

    >> that, and, there's, and, okay,, so, 80, had, a

  1340. 52:02

    question for you which is

  1341. 52:04

she had two great questions for you. One

  1342. 52:06

is ask Kate what she used to carry her

  1343. 52:10

    hair extensions around in.

  1344. 52:15

    >> Do, you, remember?, Uh,, it, was, a, it, was, a

  1345. 52:18

tiny linen drawstring polka dot bag

  1346. 52:22

that I think she gave me.

  1347. 52:23

    >> Okay,

  1348. 52:25

    >> great., It, seemed, like, an, item, that, 80

  1349. 52:27

would have cuz it was polka-dotted and

  1350. 52:29

it was like sweet and drawstring.

  1351. 52:31

    >> Okay,, so, um, I'm, going, to, take, your, word

  1352. 52:34

for it. Well, there's no way we can

  1353. 52:36

    check.

  1354. 52:37

    >> And, then, the, but, the, second, question, was

  1355. 52:40

what would be your ideal day? because we

  1356. 52:43

were kind of talking about what we were

  1357. 52:45

talking about earlier that there's this

  1358. 52:47

part of you that like loves that feeling

  1359. 52:50

of performing and being, you know

  1360. 52:53

meeting 80 new people and being on the

  1361. 52:54

road and being part of the circus. And

  1362. 52:56

then there's a part of you that wants to

  1363. 52:57

kind of be in the woods and in nature

  1364. 52:59

and be in kind of a peaceful version of

  1365. 53:03

your life. What is Kate McKinnon's

  1366. 53:06

perfect day? How would it go?

  1367. 53:08

    >> I, would, wake, with, the, sun., I, would

  1368. 53:12

garden for a couple hours, do carpentry

  1369. 53:16

for a couple hours, and then gather

  1370. 53:19

    my mother and sister

  1371. 53:22

    the loves of my life

  1372. 53:25

or some other folks that I love, and

  1373. 53:30

    make pasta together

  1374. 53:33

    >> and, eat, it.

  1375. 53:35

    >> Yum.

  1376. 53:35

    >> From, scratch.

  1377. 53:38

    >> Damn.

  1378. 53:39

    >> That, was, my, 40th, birthday, party., It, was

  1379. 53:41

a pasta making party with my family and

  1380. 53:45

my best friend and her family.

  1381. 53:49

    >> That, sounds

  1382. 53:51

    >> my, 40th., Yeah,, my, 40th, I, was, still

  1383. 53:54

filming Parks and Reg. So, it was like a

  1384. 53:56

bar somewhere in the middle of filming.

  1385. 53:58

    My 50th I had a dance party

  1386. 54:02

    >> and, that, was, so, fun, because, I, love

  1387. 54:03

    dancing

  1388. 54:04

    >> and, I, prefer, dancing, over, talking.

  1389. 54:07

    >> Yes.

  1390. 54:07

    >> Do, you, like, to, dance?, I, love, to, dance

  1391. 54:09

and I I also prefer dancing over like I

  1392. 54:12

will I will leave a party after 10

  1393. 54:14

minutes if it's just talking because I

  1394. 54:16

    can't.

  1395. 54:16

    >> Ad, said, the, same, thing, that, you, two, gave

  1396. 54:18

each other a lot of permission to leave

  1397. 54:20

parties which is what friendship is all

  1398. 54:22

    about.

  1399. 54:26

    >> Okay,, we're, going, to, talk, about, your

  1400. 54:27

incredible book because and I want to

  1401. 54:28

talk to you about books. Um but I want

  1402. 54:31

to just do a very quick rapid fire.

  1403. 54:33

    Okay, number one gardening tip.

  1404. 54:36

    Um

  1405. 54:38

    or any gardening tip.

  1406. 54:40

    >> Compost.

  1407. 54:42

    >> It's, all, about, compost.

  1408. 54:44

    >> Oh, god.

  1409. 54:44

    >> It's, No,, it's, a, pain, in, the, ass.

  1410. 54:46

    >> Yeah,, I, got, to, do, it.

  1411. 54:47

    >> Yeah., Okay.

  1412. 54:47

    >> No,, it's, terrible.

  1413. 54:49

    >> Favorite, ice, cream, flavor?

  1414. 54:51

    >> Chocolate, fudge, brownie.

  1415. 54:53

    >> You, said, that, really, casually., Do, you

  1416. 54:54

    not like ice cream?

  1417. 54:55

    >> No,, I, love, it.

  1418. 54:56

    >> Okay., Favorite, childhood, movie?

  1419. 54:59

    >> The, Producers.

  1420. 55:01

    >> We, watch, The, Producers, every, week, in, our

  1421. 55:03

    house.

  1422. 55:05

    Favorite books growing up?

  1423. 55:10

    >> Rald, Doll.

  1424. 55:12

    >> Um,, and, I, loved, a, good, atlas., I, loved, a

  1425. 55:15

    book about geography.

  1426. 55:18

    >> Do, you, are, you, good, at, ge

  1427. 55:19

    >> cultures, of, the, world?

  1428. 55:21

    >> I, do, love, geography.

  1429. 55:22

    >> Do, you, have, a, good, geographical, sense?

  1430. 55:24

    You

  1431. 55:24

    >> I, would, say, yes.

  1432. 55:26

    >> When, you, know, like, when, you're, standing

  1433. 55:27

somewhere, you want to know where north

  1434. 55:30

is and you talk that way like it's west

  1435. 55:32

    of the highway.

  1436. 55:34

    >> Yes., And, you, know, where, countries, are?

  1437. 55:36

    >> I, do., That, I, do.

  1438. 55:38

    >> That's, great.

  1439. 55:38

    >> I, love, the, countries, and, I, love, to, know

  1440. 55:40

their capitals and I love knowing

  1441. 55:43

countries and capitals. It's a hobby.

  1442. 55:46

    >> I'm, going, to, give, you, one., Uh, Argentina,

  1443. 55:49

    >> buenosis,

  1444. 55:51

    >> Canada,

  1445. 55:52

    >> Ottawa,

  1446. 55:54

    >> China,

  1447. 55:55

    >> Beijing,

  1448. 55:56

    >> Costa, Rica.

  1449. 55:57

    >> Um, well,, no., Is, it, Sanan?

  1450. 56:00

    >> Close.

  1451. 56:00

    >> No,, it's, San, Jose., Okay.

  1452. 56:03

    >> Is, it?

  1453. 56:03

    >> Yep., Please, God., Okay., Thank, you.

  1454. 56:05

    >> Um

  1455. 56:07

    uh let's see. Ethiopia.

  1456. 56:09

    >> Uh, Adis, Sababa.

  1457. 56:11

    >> Dang.

  1458. 56:13

    >> Hungary.

  1459. 56:14

    >> Budapest.

  1460. 56:16

    Uh Iran.

  1461. 56:18

    >> Thrron., Libya.

  1462. 56:21

    >> Tripoli.

  1463. 56:21

    >> And, the, last, one, is, the, capital, of

  1464. 56:25

    Sagal.

  1465. 56:27

    >> Um

  1466. 56:29

is it? No. Acra is the capital of Ghana

  1467. 56:32

and the capital of Sagal is [ __ ] me.

  1468. 56:36

    I knew this.

  1469. 56:39

    I really It's with an R.

  1470. 56:41

    >> Yeah,, there's, an, R, at, the, end.

  1471. 56:42

    >> It's, Dar.

  1472. 56:43

    >> Yes.

  1473. 56:43

    >> [ __ ]

  1474. 56:45

    [ __ ]

  1475. 56:47

    >> Kate,, that's, impressive.

  1476. 56:48

    >> Hobby., In, fact,, during, a, read, through, at

  1477. 56:52

SNL when I wasn't in any sketches, I

  1478. 56:56

just was practicing my capitals for fun.

  1479. 57:00

So, let's talk about the Millisent Quib

  1480. 57:02

School of Etiquette for Young Ladies of

  1481. 57:04

    Mad Science.

  1482. 57:05

    >> Your, second, book.

  1483. 57:08

    >> Incredible., Congratulations.

  1484. 57:11

    >> Thank, you.

  1485. 57:11

    >> You, have, written, a, you, you, have, a, series

  1486. 57:14

now, the Millison Quibb series, and you

  1487. 57:16

    have one and two

  1488. 57:17

    >> and, two, is, out.

  1489. 57:19

    >> Yes.

  1490. 57:19

    >> And, is, a, New, York, Times, bestseller.

  1491. 57:24

    >> Tell, us, about, this, book,, why, you, wrote

  1492. 57:26

    it, what's it about?

  1493. 57:28

    >> Yeah., Um,, well,, I, got, I, got, I, started

  1494. 57:31

writing it 12 years ago before SNL.

  1495. 57:35

    >> Amazing.

  1496. 57:35

    >> And, then, I, just, kind, of, kept, at, it, uh

  1497. 57:38

    intermittently throughout that time. And

  1498. 57:43

    I love middle-grade literature

  1499. 57:47

    >> um, because, I, think, it, has, uh, things, in

  1500. 57:51

    common with sketch comedy, i.e.

  1501. 57:54

funny hair and funny names and um and a

  1502. 57:59

    sense of hope.

  1503. 58:00

    >> Yeah.

  1504. 58:01

    >> And, and, questions, of, identity, and

  1505. 58:03

questions of belonging. You know, a a

  1506. 58:05

sketch is often about uh a fly in the

  1507. 58:08

ointment, an odd man out. I wanted to

  1508. 58:11

write about uh being a 12-year-old

  1509. 58:15

girl in a in a repressive turn of the

  1510. 58:18

century town. I didn't grow up in a

  1511. 58:21

repressive turn of the century town, but

  1512. 58:23

I grew up in a town um with, you know

  1513. 58:27

normal folks and I I felt like a freak.

  1514. 58:30

    I think every 12-year-old feels like a

  1515. 58:31

    freak. Um

  1516. 58:33

    >> and, I, loved, science, and, I, loved, bugs, and

  1517. 58:36

I loved like icky stuff and um I uh I

  1518. 58:41

had I was fortunate enough to have

  1519. 58:43

adults in my orbit who were um funny and

  1520. 58:48

weird. my parents among them and a lot

  1521. 58:52

of my teachers and I I think having that

  1522. 58:54

    kind of a mentor who

  1523. 58:57

    >> uh, celebrates, what, is, unique, about, you

  1524. 59:00

instead of stepping on it is absolutely

  1525. 59:03

instrumental and so I wanted to write

  1526. 59:06

about uh a mad scientist who's a pariah

  1527. 59:09

in this town who um takes these little

  1528. 59:12

weirdos under her wing and um

  1529. 59:16

    >> teaches, them, mad, science, and, they, fight

  1530. 59:18

the bad guys and uh have adventures. And

  1531. 59:21

I I wanted to write something that

  1532. 59:24

hopefully would inspire young people to

  1533. 59:26

    go outside

  1534. 59:28

    >> uh, for, the, first, time, in, days

  1535. 59:31

    >> and, touch, a, grass, touch, grass., And, I

  1536. 59:34

mean the the times of my childhood that

  1537. 59:36

which was before cell phones which are

  1538. 59:39

just the best time. I mean one day me

  1539. 59:42

and Alexis North found like a fox skull

  1540. 59:46

in like someone's hedges and like there

  1541. 59:49

was an earwig in it and it was the great

  1542. 59:52

talk about the best day of my life. Oh

  1543. 59:54

my god the earwigs in that fox skull. We

  1544. 59:57

    were just like

  1545. 59:59

the world is magic. It's made of magic.

  1546. 1:00:03

And um I wish children had some more

  1547. 1:00:06

access to that kind of stuff today.

  1548. 1:00:09

    >> Yes., And, uh, I, wanted, to, inspire, them, to

  1549. 1:00:13

go outside and touch a bug.

  1550. 1:00:15

    >> Um, Okay., Well,, I, feel, like

  1551. 1:00:18

you know this interview started with you

  1552. 1:00:21

worrying that you weren't going to be

  1553. 1:00:23

funny or something like remember that.

  1554. 1:00:25

    >> I, feel, I, wasn't.

  1555. 1:00:29

    >> I'd, like, to, start, again,, please.

  1556. 1:00:31

    You're nuts.

  1557. 1:00:34

    >> You're, so, nuts., You

  1558. 1:00:37

But I want to finish the this thing last

  1559. 1:00:39

thing which is I think people in comedy

  1560. 1:00:41

are all as we know they're all different

  1561. 1:00:43

kinds of people. Do people come up and

  1562. 1:00:45

expect you to be a certain way and are

  1563. 1:00:48

they surprised when you are quieter and

  1564. 1:00:51

more reserved or more introverted than

  1565. 1:00:52

you than they expect you to be?

  1566. 1:00:55

    >> I, think, they, are., And, sometimes, they're

  1567. 1:00:58

disappointed and vocal about that. Um

  1568. 1:01:02

I've gotten a lot of Wow, you're not

  1569. 1:01:04

funny in real life or speak up. What?

  1570. 1:01:08

    Um, I've gotten I've gotten you're so

  1571. 1:01:11

    serious for a comedian. Yeah

  1572. 1:01:14

    >> you're, being, very, serious.

  1573. 1:01:16

    >> Oh,

  1574. 1:01:16

    >> you're, being, very, serious.

  1575. 1:01:18

    >> Well,, or, a, that's, not, funny., I've, had

  1576. 1:01:21

    that.

  1577. 1:01:22

    >> Like,, well,, I'm, sorry., It, isn't.

  1578. 1:01:25

It wasn't very funny. Anyway, nice to

  1579. 1:01:28

meet you. Oh, [ __ ] I gotta ask you one

  1580. 1:01:30

    question. Oh, [ __ ] I forgot one

  1581. 1:01:32

    question.

  1582. 1:01:33

    >> And, it's, the, best, question, and, it's, the

  1583. 1:01:34

    best one to ask you.

  1584. 1:01:35

    >> Go, for, it.

  1585. 1:01:37

    >> What, is, making, you, laugh, these, days?

  1586. 1:01:38

What are you What are you What What are

  1587. 1:01:40

    you watching, reading, listening to

  1588. 1:01:43

watching a video of when you need to

  1589. 1:01:46

lighten up, I'll tell you. Oo, there's a

  1590. 1:01:49

man on YouTube, can't wait, from

  1591. 1:01:52

Australia. He cleans drains. He clears

  1592. 1:01:55

    hopeful hopelessly disgusting clogged

  1593. 1:01:58

    restaurant drains filled with grease.

  1594. 1:02:00

    >> I, love, uh, unclogging, videos.

  1595. 1:02:03

    >> This, man,

  1596. 1:02:04

    >> this, is, the, earth, in, us.

  1597. 1:02:05

    >> You, never, see, his, face., He, is, enthusiasm

  1598. 1:02:09

on two feet. He says, he'll say, "Oh

  1599. 1:02:14

you guys, this is what dreams are made

  1600. 1:02:17

of. Can you believe we get to be here

  1601. 1:02:21

clearing this drain? This one's choa

  1602. 1:02:24

block. Let's fire up the jet. Oh, you

  1603. 1:02:27

little ripper. Come on, you good thing.

  1604. 1:02:30

Like he has like free and and it's about

  1605. 1:02:33

and then he'll be like, "Oh, there's a

  1606. 1:02:35

cockroach. Oh, there's some corn there.

  1607. 1:02:38

Toilet paper. Oh, this is what dreams

  1608. 1:02:42

are made of, you guys." And I just I

  1609. 1:02:44

    love enthusiasm

  1610. 1:02:46

    >> and, I, would, recommend, it's, called, Drain

  1611. 1:02:48

Cleaning Australia. Okay, I'm just gonna

  1612. 1:02:50

watch one little thing before. He sounds

  1613. 1:02:52

    amazing.

  1614. 1:02:54

Drain cleaning Australia. Also, I love

  1615. 1:02:56

his um his commentary about what he

  1616. 1:02:59

    finds.

  1617. 1:02:59

    >> Yeah.

  1618. 1:03:00

    >> Okay,, stand, by., This, one, says, sewage

  1619. 1:03:03

spraying into the sky. Is that good?

  1620. 1:03:06

    >> Okay,, here, we, go.

  1621. 1:03:07

    >> We're, back, for, another, block, drain,

  1622. 1:03:09

mate. And I'm just going to let the

  1623. 1:03:10

lovely customer know that we're here.

  1624. 1:03:13

    >> Good, day,, mate., Bruce, from, Drain

  1625. 1:03:15

Cleaning Australia. You're home. So he

  1626. 1:03:17

he goes to he goes to meet the people

  1627. 1:03:20

    first. Let's see. Let's

  1628. 1:03:22

    >> And, he's, sorry., We, got, we, got, a

  1629. 1:03:24

    commercial.

  1630. 1:03:25

    >> You, pay, for, you., You, don't, pay, for

  1631. 1:03:26

YouTube. You come here. We don't pay for

  1632. 1:03:28

    YouTube.

  1633. 1:03:29

    >> Are, you, kidding, me?, The, price.

  1634. 1:03:33

    >> They, want, me, to, pay, to, cut, out, the

  1635. 1:03:35

commercials. No, I'll wait until the

  1636. 1:03:37

skip button. Okay, here we go.

  1637. 1:03:39

    >> You, little, ripper.

  1638. 1:03:43

And wow, you can see all the tree roots

  1639. 1:03:46

still down there. So, we punched a hole

  1640. 1:03:49

    through the blockage.

  1641. 1:03:50

    >> I, get, it.

  1642. 1:03:52

    >> Tree, roots, are, the, least, of, his

  1643. 1:03:54

    problems. Usually, it's like um a a a

  1644. 1:03:59

dachshund sized piece of hair or or

  1645. 1:04:03

grease or human [ __ ] It is. And he's

  1646. 1:04:07

like, "Woohoo! Woohoo! You little rier."

  1647. 1:04:11

Kate, thank you for being here.

  1648. 1:04:13

    >> Thank, you.

  1649. 1:04:13

    >> Thank, you.

  1650. 1:04:16

    >> I, can't, tell, if, your, eyes, are, green, or

  1651. 1:04:18

blue. I think they're both and it

  1652. 1:04:21

    doesn't matter. They're just

  1653. 1:04:23

    >> All, that, matters, is, today.

  1654. 1:04:25

    >> All, that, matters, is, your, name.

  1655. 1:04:29

    >> Thank, you,, Kate, McKinnon., You, are, so

  1656. 1:04:31

interesting to talk to and I love being

  1657. 1:04:33

around you and your beautiful skin. Um

  1658. 1:04:37

check out Kate's book. And, you know, in

  1659. 1:04:39

this Polar Plunge, I I just wanted to

  1660. 1:04:42

talk about the books that I loved when I

  1661. 1:04:44

was in middle school. There were many

  1662. 1:04:46

many series of books that I loved, but

  1663. 1:04:48

we talked a lot about homesteading today

  1664. 1:04:50

and growing your own vegetables and

  1665. 1:04:52

pulling potatoes out of the earth. And

  1666. 1:04:55

it made me think about Little House on

  1667. 1:04:56

the Prairie and Laura Ingles Wilder. And

  1668. 1:05:00

um, God, I just I loved those books. And

  1669. 1:05:03

and here's a tip in my Polar Plunge. If

  1670. 1:05:05

you need to take a wonderful nap, put on

  1671. 1:05:08

an old episode of Little House on the

  1672. 1:05:10

Prairie and the sound of the clipclop of

  1673. 1:05:13

the horses and the music and like

  1674. 1:05:17

and then Paw just coming in from the

  1675. 1:05:20

cold and somebody putting like a a hot

  1676. 1:05:23

cake on the fire. It's going to knock

  1677. 1:05:26

you out. You're going to go right to

  1678. 1:05:28

sleep. So read the books. incredible

  1679. 1:05:31

books from Laura Engles Wilder. Watch

  1680. 1:05:33

the TV show and try to stay up as long

  1681. 1:05:35

as you can while you do. Okay, thanks so

  1682. 1:05:37

much for listening. Thanks Kate for

  1683. 1:05:39

being here. I love talking to you and

  1684. 1:05:41

    see you soon. Bye.

  1685. 1:05:43
